Household goods not shippable with CR-1 Visa?

Ok folks - now the nightmare starts - just found out from the moving company we hired to ship my personal effects down to the US cannot proceed without a copy of my actual green card, front and back.

CBP is telling the company that my stamped CR-1 Visa only allows ME to enter, not my stuff.

#######.

Has anyone dealt with this before?? (I'm moving from Western Canada to Michigan)

Freaked out...

I have not moved yet, but I just booked with U-Pak moving company and have read many, many times that you can bring your household goods with you to the US. There is a form that you need and I believe the company will need to have a copy of your I-94 to show that you are now legally in the country.... In the Canada Regional forum there is lots of information and hopefully others will have some thoughts.

What company told you this?

An immigrating IR1/CR1 will not get an I-94

I'd find a new moving company. The endorsed visa IS a green card.

That's what I told them, can't get another company as they are holding my goods in storage until they can clear them through. WILL be going over my person's head to their head office rep to discuss tomorrow when I'm a bit more cooler headed.

On a more positive note, I got both my SSN card today AND my EI documents.......

Cheers.

Your post makes it sound like you haven't crossed yet, if so that's the problem. You have to cross before they can send your stuff down. They will need a photocopy of your visa after it's been stamped/endorsed.

But then again you mention your SSN so I'm confused :D

I am confused in the same way :)

If you have your SSN then you must have already crossed? That means your passport has been stamped, no? That is the same as having your green card. If they are the idiots they sound like they are then perhaps they are only going to be willing to accept your green card. If you have your SSN your green card hopefully isn't too far behind? Did you pay the processing fee for it? Can you see where you are in the processing of it?

According to her timeline..she moved to the USA on Xmas day...........

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Dealing with an incompetent moving company...so probably best to do the research for them and show that ur stuff can be moved..easiest method may be to find the border crossing they are going to cross..call that border crossing and get a number that those numpties can call and get the facts..take them all of 5 minutes......Just make it very clear on what kind of visa you have...best of luck

Thanks to all and sorry for any confusion. Yes, I made my POE on Christmas Day.
I've spoken to the head office of the movers, and what has happened is that (1) the person I was dealing in Vancouver with did not deliver their information to me properly, and (2) turns out United Van Lines has been having shipments turned back at various border crossings with just the CR-1 Stamped Visa.
Appears to be random CBP officers who are either stupid or in a bad mood or both.
The very helpful UVL rep I spoke to was really just giving me the option to wait until I had the actual card so as to avoid additional charges. The storage fees to leave my stuff where it is for a couple months or however long it takes to get my card are around $250 a month, so not completely onerous. The charges if the driver gets turned back or delayed for inspection can be far worse than that.

So they're giving me the option to wait or to take a chance and get it shipped. Have to hope that my card turns up quickly - I paid for it via ELIS on October 24th, anyone know how long after POE I should expect to wait to see an update?? I'm guessing with the holidays thrown in there that I might see an update to my status from "Accepted" and Pending to Issued/activated or whatever the term is they use on that site. Tried to get through to USCIS, but as usual it's pretty impossible.

Fingers crossed this doesn't take too long!! I want my stuff!!

Peace all.

Just an update - after several back and forth calls and emails, my stuff has been loaded onto a truck and is making it's way to me. The moving company's head office have been extremely helpful and managed to get a couple of emails printed off from their CBP contacts who confirmed my stuff can be imported with my endorsed passport. I've decided to remain positive that my stuff will get through with no problems. It's 50 boxes and a couple bookcases, so can't imagine why they would need to inspect it.

Anyway, it should arrive sometime before the end of the month......

Peace.

After my initial freak out last week, I'm happy to report that my goods were admitted yesterday, with one box opened and inspected (I'm suspecting my cat's catnip toys, LOL) and no additional charges.

I expect delivery of them this Friday.

So alls well that ends well.

Peace all.
