I enjoyed eating the lobster, but you know, it's one of those things I can do without....give me a good ol' Black Angus steak, medium well, any day! Baked potato on the side, and a salad please, with sweet iced tea.

Making me hungry Karen. I am cooking popcorn chicken, brocolli with cheese sauce and rolls. Just does not sound like it will hit the spot now. :help::lol:

I'm holding out on the steak, til Joel gets here. He loves a good steak and I want us to do that together. Just got home from having mexican though...very filling, very spicy. Whew!

I thought it easier and less painful than having property of... tattooed on her butt. LOL

:lol::lol::lol:

I like what my sister-in-law and her husband did. They made a new last name by combining parts of his greek surname with her swedish one. I really like the name they came up with, especially since I can pronounce it.

that is a veryyyyy interesting idea!!! thanks for sharing!

it's funny, because for the longest time people of the upper crust of society wouldn't eat lobsters because they were considered "scavengers" and "bottom feeders" of the ocean. The peasants didn't care, they were cheap food.

They're still bottom feeding scavengers and I won't put any of it near my mouth

Never really thought about it, but it does seem like a sexist tradition smacking of patriarchal property.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Doesn't someone give away the bride

You think it's a good thing? Why, because you're a man? By the same logic, apartheid is good if you're white?

The "property of ..." joke was funny but now I'm not so sure you were joking.

I usually disagree with you but I have to say I agree with you on this one. Just because I didn't change my last name doesn't mean I don't want to be a part of my husband's life...I'm a part of his just as he is of mine but I never see guys itchin to change their surnames to their wives. It is sort of patriarchal...I agree...

I think it comes from some long ago tradition...not sure where it came from to be honest. My reasons for changing my name are from a different point of view and nothing at all to do with tradition. I want my husband's name to show that I am starting a new life, my former name is only a reminder of the life I left behind (one of abuse and misery). I don't see it as becoming his "property". Just my take on the whole name issue. :)

In Cherokee traditions, the men marry into the wife's family. Is this matriarchal property?

When I get married I'll add one more name instead of changing them. My name will be Marcela Martins Espíndula Knight then. I'm not going to get rid of my other two names because they mean too much to me and that way I'll feel my mom and dad always close to me.:thumbs:

I will add Higgins to my existing surname - becoming Anita Bhatia Higgins. Anita Bhatia has been my name for nearly 50 years... and it is me... so the question of giving it up does not arise.

I would like to say something pertaining to the misunderstanding that took place earlier on in the thread... if I did not know you I would have taken umbrage at what was said... but knowing you - and knowing that you would not mean to offend... it was easy to put into perspective... but when you cannot hear what the person is saying and therefore not know where the emphasis lies such things become subject to misinterpretation... that is my take on things... but hey all's well that ends well (F)

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

As usual, the Canadians took over the thread and turned it into a discussion about food. How predictable.
