Difference between form I-864 and I-864A?

"Household" in the I-864 is a tax term meaning people you're financially responsible for not necessarily the people you live with.

Even if you lived with your father, unless he claimed you on his taxes or you were under 21, you would not be part of his "household" count nor he on yours.

Your father counts 1 for the immigrant, 1 for himself, 1 for any spouse, and then any other dependents or other children he may have.

You count 1 for the immigrant, 1 for yourself but do not put 1 on the spouse spot because you already counted your wife as the immigrant.

On your I-864 you'd just count yourself and your spouse as 2 people.

You're assuming my spouse is the intending immigrant, correct?

No I'm saying you and your immigrating spouse. Just don't count them in the "spouse" box as NLR said as you'd be counting them twice.

Got it. I was just confused because I didn't understand how two people could claim to live with the immigrant but not with each other. Didn't realize "household" was just a tax term. Thanks a lot for the help - and the lightning fast responses.

Well I was unemployed for 3.5 out of my 4 years in Europe, so I wasn't required to file taxes (you have to include a written statement saying so).

Was doing a last minute checkover of things and realized I'd forgotten to do this. The written statement can be written by you, correct? Also, the instructions say it's only necessary to include the tax returns for the most recent tax year (that including tax returns for the 2nd and 3rd most recent tax years is optional) but my wife keeps telling me that she's read (from different testomonials) that it's almost an unwritten rule that you have to include tax returns for all of the 3 most recent tax years. Surely it can't be that big of a deal if the instructions say it's optional...did any of you guys only include the most recent tax year's filing for you/your joint sponser?

Correct you can write the statement yourself - no set format is needed. And yeah we just submitted the last year of tax returns and all was good.

Jesus why is everything so complicated...so now my mom has decided to be my joint sponser instead of my step-dad (my mom doesn't want to make my step-dad liable) but the only problem is that my mom and step dad file taxes together. So basically on the tax filing she's attached to her I-864 form it looks like they're both sponsering my wife when in fact just my mom is. Also, on the part of the form where it says "my current individual annual income is:" my mom has a different number listed than on where it says "My total income as reported on my tax return for the most recent year is:" because her income (the income she's sponsering my wife and me with) is different than the income listed on her joint tax return (which includes my step-father's income). Basically I'm afraid that the NVC will become confused and think that my step-dad is a 2nd joint sponser (when in fact he isn't) and in turn deny my wife for not having the I-864A form they think she needs. Is this cause for concern? Even if the NVC does realize what's going on - is it acceptable to just use the income/assets of one person from a joint tax return?

Your step father would never have been a second joint sponsor, he would simply be a household member.

If you want to use only your mother's income include the entire tax return (all schedules, w2s etc) vs the tax return transcript.

What you enter for Total Income from the tax returns does not have to match what your individual current annual income is. Those are separate things. You list the Total Income from the joint returns where it asks, and you list the current annual income where it asks. Provide letter from employer and/or recent pay stubs, plus their individual W-2 along with their most recent joint tax transcript(or complete copy of return) to prove their individual current annual income amount.
