After arrival in USA, what next?

Hi everyone,

My fiance has arrived in the US about 2 weeks ago. Our wedding is on January 15. I was wondering, can we start applying for a social security number prior to our marriage? (if given a social security number, will that be his number even after the AOS is approved and given a green card?) What about a driver's license? If these are possible to apply prior to marriage, what are the steps to do so and the requirements.

Thank you so much for your help.

Yes you can apply for the SSN now. SSN is the SSN forever (has yours ever changed?)

Not sure about driver's license, that is a state issue.

Its better to get the SSN after your marriage so you don't have to update her last name again. Some states allow you to take the driving test exam base on your I-94. But the permit will expire the same date on the I-94.

The one plus for having a SSN is to open a bank account or be a signatory on your account. Otherwise, you can get it after your married at which time you will need your marriage document as proof for SS. Like Hank said, the SSN is the only one you will have and it's guaranteed to last all your life and take your money when ever you have too much.

Check with your states DMV website for further requirements to get a DL in your state. None of us can say with certainty what you will need.

unfortunately this wastes time,

as

there's a 74 day window in which to apply, as a k-1 visa holder,

and

if not apply in VISA name, a DHS namecheck occurs, taking 2 to 10 weeks - tis the kiss of death.

Seriously, the OP should just go in with the I-94, passport and apply in VISA name asap.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

god willing, I plan on marrying within 2 weeks maximum when my fiance gets here. does it still make sense to get a SSN before getting married or after? which process would allow for less interaction with the government?

IMO, I agree with Oatmeal...after. Difference in amount of interaction is minimal all things considered. Your interaction with the government will never end sans immigration after naturalization.

I also need to mention that getting my fiance on insurance as soon as possible is a priority as well.

Wrong.

Better to get SSN as soon as beneficiary enters the USA.

As far as Driver License in Texas you need valid SS # and EAD/AP or GreenCard now of days in order to apply for a DL.

Thanks for the reply. Yes my fiance is male, so I don't think I have to worry about his name change. I just wanted to process things as early as I can and get things out of the way. I just wanted to clarify, although he has a social security number, he is still not able to apply for a job correct?
