Just received a checklist for military records for my husband, who released from the CF in April 2014. We sent his Military Personnel Record Resume (MPRR) upon the recommendation of another VJ member, but received a checklist. Any advice on exactly what document NVC wants for this? The NVC website wasn't particularly helpful. Thanks.

Wow, I wish I had some words of wisdom here for you. I had to send my own military records but, because I am a dinosaur, the National Archives in Ottawa (I had long lost any paper UERs I ever had) sent me a CD of 309 paged of scanned documents. It contained every message between Air Command and NDHQ and whatever base I was posted to at any given time. It was full of course reports, trade qualifications, promotions, etc. I weeded through it to omit repetitive information in order to reduce the file size, but it was tough.

I am guessing they want a synopsis of his career. I have not received a checklist for this yet so I am hoping it was enough because, like you say, they are less than clear in what exactly it is they require. If you have anything like his UERs, or whatever they call that stuff these days, any record of his career and progression, I am guessing that is what they are looking for.

Hope this helps! :)

Weird that's all I sent----along with a very short cover letter from my CO...that I had written up stating it was a genuine military document--and he just signed it!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Probably depends on the person reviewing the docs, I'm guessing..

Thanks all! After speaking with a less-than-friendly person at NVC it seems that all they care about is the issuer, not the records themselves.

So, we have to get new records issued from the, "Director, Access to Information and Privacy (DAIP), National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa"

What a nightmare -- I had already put in a request for those in September, but received a reply that they are backlogged in Ottawa and to expect a THREE MONTH wait. Ugh. So, now we're stuck.

More waiting...

Just to provide an update, my husband was able to reach someone in Ottawa by phone. The person said his records are being transferred to CD and will be mailed out this week. We should receive them next week.

Then we just have to print them out, send them to NVC and let the 60-day wait commence! So much for a December or January interview :(

Gosh...I got mine from Library and Archives Canada - Reference Services Division, in Ottawa. I never even heard of that other office. Mine are so old they probably had to blow dust off of them.

I provided a copy of the letter they enclosed with the CD in my IV docs. Man I hope they don't checklist me.

Finally received the CD of my husband's military records from Ottawa. It's 308 pages. Many are repeats. Since I went with paper mail processing, should I just print and send everything or try to weed it down to something more manageable?

I'm planning to include the cover page showing it came from DAIP. Otherwise, I don't know how NVC would know who it was issued by.

Hi!

I had to go through (308 pages also) and omit duplication of info, and then reduce the size (had to divide into six parts) in order to keep my attachments under 5MB. I understand you sent your docs through the mail, I hope you don't get charged too much for that. I printed out what I did send to bring to Montreal, and it weighs quite a bit. Thank you for the update and good luck on the rest of your journey!

Did any of you just send the cd with all your military records on it? I have the same issue of 261 pages of info, many duplications, photo copies of blank pages and envelopes... What a nightmare. I have not been able to find an Australian forum relating to military records, so this is the best I have to go with.
