I don't even like basketball & I hate Duke. their fans are some of the most annoying I've ever encountered.

I've met both Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski, on different occasions both at the airport in the AA lounge (I met John Edwards there too, busy lounge). Coach Smith was a class act. Happy to talk, shaking hands, drinkin' scotch. Krzyzewski not so much, sat in the corner, avoided eye contact and waved off a young guy who asked for an autograph. This was in Durham for god sake, the man has no class.

I find if funny that people are surprised that athletes are treated like gold and get passing grades....without even going to class.

This doesn't start in college. It starts in junior high or even younger. Any athlete that has exceptional skills gets treated like a rock star. Parents, peers, coaches etc all play a part.

My take is that college athletes should not have to get passing grades. If someone gets an athletic scholarship.....why should they need to go to class? Sure...if they are smart they will....but why make it mandatory? They are there as an athletes and should not be denied a chance to go pro simply because they are not to smart and /or don't really give a #### about academics.

Are academic scholarship recipients required to be athletic? maintain a certain body weight? stay in shape?

I actually took a one semester black literature class back in college. Taught by Sonia Sanchez, a well known poet. I was the only white student in a class of about 25.
