URGENT: Obama Admin Will Issue Travel Bans… But It’s Not What You Think

I guess I don't get the argument from some here that if it hasn't happened yet, we shouldn't worry about it. I'm not talking specifically about the scenario of soldiers being sent to West Africa. Just in general. Same thing with the voter ID thing. The argument from some is that voter fraud is so minimal, that we shouldn't be concerned. What's wrong with being proactive concerning this Ebola outbreak?

It's 'modern' upside-down O'bama-world logic. Scary that so many people are able to abandon common sense and sign on to it. Of course banning flights would make infestation in the US more probable (I have yet to hear anyone provide a cogent explanation for this one; they just provide it as a 'given').

Do you not understand the concept of "precautions"? I was under the impression you were somehow involved with health care.

Wow. This has to be an act right? You can't really be that dense.

Do you think the doctors there were protective gear at home in bed? You put on PPE when you are going to be in contact with infected people. You take it off when you're done.

Our forces there will be doing construction. Why would they wear hazmat suits for that?

Probably because nobody has made that argument.

Yeah good point. Someone did in fact get on a plane and come here and infect other people. Which makes the need for a travel ban even more necessary. Thanks for the correction.

The argument about travel bans has been made. Armchair Ebola experts overwhelmingly seem to be in favor. Public health and infectious disease experts don't reach a clear consensus.

Argument against travel restrictions is basically this:

Would a Ban Matter?

Many public health experts who oppose the travel ban argue that it's simply not practical. That includes Columbia University's Morse, who describes himself as a "fence-sitter" on the issue but doesn't support a travel ban right now because people with financial means can travel to an intermediate country before entering the United States. West Africa's many porous borders make such travel even easier, he said.

It wouldn't make sense to ban people who fly out of Senegal—where, like the United States, there has been only one case of Ebola, Morse said. But if one person with Ebola made it there, others could, too.

A ban could also encourage people to lie about where they have been, Morse said: "One of the real concerns is that if you outlaw [travel], it will discourage people from coming forth with the truth."

Frieden, for his part, has focused his opposition to a travel ban on the hardship it would present for fighting the epidemic in Africa.

"If we do something that impedes our ability to stop the outbreak in West Africa, it could spread further there," he said Tuesday.

On Sunday, Frieden also cited the example of Senegal, which has restricted flights from the affected countries. The restrictions delayed the arrival of investigators looking for people who had come into contact with the country's one Ebola patient.

Plus, international volunteers who go into West Africa to help treat Ebola patients need to know that they can get back out, Frieden said.

At SIM, an international mission that has led Ebola treatment centers and seen two of its American missionaries recover from the virus, travel restrictions might make volunteers think twice, said George Salloum, who leads the agency's Ebola crisis response team.

"Anything you do to restrict movement of people back and forth or keeping them from getting back to work, it could have an impact on the flow of people willing to serve overseas," he said.

So to summarize:

- travel restrictions can be readily circumvented, encourage deception and make it difficult to track infected people and their contacts.

- travel restrictions will make it harder to fight and contain the virus in West Africa, which will ultimately make it harder to stop spreading elsewhere, including here.

I guess we got rid of that visa system .. That stamp that the put in a passport to allow you to enter into a country ? That is how you control the borders .

http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/country/liberia.html

Quick Facts
  • PASSPORT VALIDITY:

Must be valid at time of entry

  • BLANK PASSPORT PAGES:

One page required for entry stamp

  • TOURIST VISA REQUIRED:

    Yes

  • VACCINATIONS:

A certificate documenting Yellow Fever vaccination is required for all those over 1 year of age and is recommended for all those over 9 months of age.

  • CURRENCY RESTRICTIONS FOR ENTRY:

    See Special Circumstances section below

  • CURRENCY RESTRICTIONS FOR EXIT:

    See Special Circumstances section below

I guess they do stamp your passport upon entry.....Just look at the passport and if someone has entered Liberia in the last say 90 days Visa denied for entry to the United States.

All you liberals say this will stop all medical help. .. Just crazy liberal speak. PC is your main concern ... Would not want to be racist would we

That has been covered. by you liberals. More folks can die millions spent on ebola all in the name of PC. There is no reason to stop doctors or aid workers from going over there. Just keep an eye on folks entering this country without a very good reason.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. I get deja vu typing this, But I'm not sure what your post has to do with anything.

The question was if there should be travel restrictions, not how to implement them. How to implement them is obvious. If they would help or not is not clear.

Won't they be constructing hospitals and living accommodations for ebola patients? That's what I read. Sounds to me like their exposure will be limited, not nonexistent.

I for one will be surprised if no service member contracts ebola. For sure the risk is much higher in Africa than Afghanistan.
