This is all explained in the guides and wiki. To answer your questions quickly though: You get your permanent green card within a few weeks of entering the USA, but are considered a permanent resident upon entry. Without the green card, you cannot work.

The stamped CR/IR1 visa in the passport acts as a temporary green card until the physical one arrives (1-2 months).

If you paid the $165 fees. Well, it takes 4 to 6 weeks. And when you are applying job GC didnt need it. Just only your SSN needed when your applying job.

Most of the time you need some form of ID showing you're legally residing in the USA. The stamped visa in the passport IS a green card. It can be used to get a driver's license, ID card, or as ID for a job as required.
