My fiance went to his interview in the american embassy and was told to come back with a police certificate from the country he studied aboard for a year. But does this certificate need an attestation??

Maybe Saylin's for spouses going through NVC can answer your question. What language do they speak where your husband studied? If it is not English it needs to be translated and certified.

Saylin's Step 6 - IV package:

Translations

"NVC's website states:

"All documents not written in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations and submitted to the NVC. The translation must include a statement signed by the translator stating that the:

-Translation is accurate, and

-Translator is competent to translate."

Despite this, I have seen cases of people getting checklists for not having translations of non-English documents. I'd suggest you get everything translated anyways to be on the safe side. It's not needed, but highly recommended.

Additionally, embassies/consulates in some countries require translations of documents into English even though they are written in the official language of the country, so it's best to check with the embassy/consulate to see what document translation requirements are."

I dont think you understand my question, obviously the certificate needs translated , that is not my concern. My concern is does the Police certificate need an "attestation", which is some sort of seal or document showing that the police certificate is supporting the truth or accuracy of what the certificate states.

Having tried to find answers to the same question, I just ordered and paid the additional for an attested certificate. They aren't going to reject it because it's been certified and it just wasn't worth taking the risk of being so close to us being together, only to be delayed to reapply. Is it significantly more expensive?

All certificates of this sort come with a seal of approval on them.

So to answer your question, just order it. Send it. that's it.

It is USA, because it is for use in the USA. The embassy in the benficiary's country is a US embassy. They are asking with which country's rules it has to be compliant. In our case, it is USA.

That will depend on the country. I was told it would take an additional 5 working days. Not all countries are equal in terms of how efficient they are at processing these things and it will vary from one place to the next. Even if I'd been told it would take an additional month, I still would have done it for the sake of having one less thing to worry about. Is there an email link on the site? Have you tried a general google search to see what comes up?

That's probably a quicker way to get your answer. For Switzerland, I would guess it wouldn't take too long. It's often done as a two step process, so it should be quick, but as previously stated, not all countries are equal. Hopefully it is just a matter of a few days so that you and your fiance can get moving with your lives :)
