Question about Travel Card (semi-urgent)

My wife is Japanese and I am a US Citizen. She is in the Adjustment of Status Process and just received her travel and employment card 3 days ago. My wife received a United States of America Employment Authorization Card that also serves as I-512 Advance Parole. So, the good thing is that now she can travel.

Her grandmother is sick in Japan. The question I have though is that a lady at my local USCIS office mentioned that my wife should try to not be out of the country for more than 30 days. If she decides to stay for longer than 30 days because her grandmother remains sick, how serious is it? Will USCIS really be hard on her given the circumstances?

Also, she'll be able to use this card to travel and this card alone, right? She has her Japan passport and this card. She has no social security number yet or any other form of US ID. Does she have to fill out any additional forms before she travels in order to be able to use this card?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, we did submit all 3 forms. And, surprisingly yesterday morning, she received a United States of America Employment Authorization Card that also serves as I-512 Advance Parole. So, the good thing is that now she can travel.

They may be warning you not to be gone too long because of being notified for an interview. Miss your interview and the green card is denied and the AP is no longer valid. There is no other reason you can't be out of the country on the AP card more than 30 days.

She just needs the combo card and her passport to re-enter the USA. She does not need you to travel with her. Before she leaves it might be a good idea to apply for the SS card and a state ID. Then it should all be there upon her return.

She only needs her Japanese passport and the card then. That's good.

I doubt that she has an interview coming soon as they just sent us a letter last week saying that she may have the interview waived. And she may be asked to interview at a later date. Worse case scenario, if they tell her that her interview is 2 weeks away, and she still hasn't returned, then I would just fly her back.

Hi,

The EAD/AP document and her passport is all she needs for travel. I'm not sure how long you are allowed to stay outside of the country on AP. I have never heard of there being a 30 day limit.

I found this:

Q: Is there a maximum number of days that an Alien can stay outside the U.S. while on AP?

A: The only limit to the amount of time is the one-year expiration date on the AP. The year period begins from the date the AP is issued. You cannot use the AP after it expires.

The main reason that she shouldn't be out of the U.S. for too long is that she might have to personally appear at a USCIS office before being approved for the GC. She will have to be available for that (as will you) so she'll need to be prepared to return on (relatively) short notice.
