Obama's office strikes back: "Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim"

To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago. Furthermore, the Indonesian school Obama attended in Jakarta is a public school that is not and never has been a Madrassa. These malicious, irresponsible charges are precisely the kind of politics the American people have grown tired of, and that Senator Obama is trying to change by focusing on bringing people together to solve our common problems.

If he went to a school, then he went to a madrressa, or an escuela, or a scuola or whatever language you want to say it in.

Madressa sinply means school in arabic

Thanks to media reporting - Madrassa, another word of middle-eastern origin now has connotations linking it to islamic extremism, or in this case "terrorist indoctrination/training camp".

If Fox got Obama's background wrong - that's just poor journalism.

fox was parroting another news source. not on the same level as cbs with their story on bush ;)

In the past week, many of you have read a now thoroughly-debunked story by Insight Magazine, owned by the Washington Times, which cites unnamed sources close to a political campaign that claim Senator Obama was enrolled for “at least four years” in an Indonesian “Madrassa”. The article says the “sources” believe the Madrassa was “espousing Wahhabism,” a form of radical Islam.

Insight Magazine published these allegations without a single named source, and without doing any independent reporting to confirm or deny the allegations. Fox News quickly parroted the charges, and Fox and Friends host Steve Doocy went so far as to ask, “Why didn’t anybody ever mention that that man right there was raised — spent the first decade of his life, raised by his Muslim father — as a Muslim and was educated in a Madrassa?”

let the fox bashing continue.

Fox, like any other news network can and should verify its sources, especially those from other networks and publications. That's standard journalistic practice.

i don't disagree that news networks should verify info - but be sure to send that memo to cbs too ;)

Certainly. I'm just tired of the way the media has become part of the partisan divide, regardless of the quality of the reporting.

My biggest complaint against the big networks is that the ramptant commercialism - plugging books and other (usually highly politically charged) products on shows that blur the boundary between comment and actual reporting. They also make sloganistic claims about their reporting that are at odds with the reality.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

Obama will never be elected because of three things: 1. His middle name is Hussein. 2. He was/is a Muslim. (When enrolling in a catholic church school, muslim was put down as his religion.) 3. Too liberal (believes in abortion, does not believe in the death penalty)

Good luck to him, I guess.

Sad that being Muslim is seen as a valid way to villify a candidate, and vehement denial of the same as a "smear tactic" is required. So much for equality of opportunity and freedom of religion in the USA.

This has very little to do with equal opportunity and freedom of religion. The US just happens to be a majority Christian country and that majority is simply not going to elect a Muslim (or Hindu or Buddhist) President. To pretend that people are going to disregard the faith of the candidate for the highest office would be silly. To suggest that the certainly decreased chances of gaining a majority vote for the office of President for being of a minority faith means that this country doesn't offer equal opportunity or limits freedom of religion is ridiculous. Freedom of religion does not mean that people are not allowed to make the faith of a candidate part of their consideration when casting their vote. Freedom of religion, like many other issues, is a sword that cuts both ways. After all, the voters have that freedom, too.

I think you've put words into people's mouths here. How do you know that Christians will not vote for the best candidate regardless of their religious beliefs? Look at JFK. He was Catholic and yet got the majority vote which included many Protestants and Jews. Just because someone is of one faith doesn't mean they're only going to vote for the person with that exact same faith.

There is not going to be a Muslim US President for at least as long as I live. Just not going to happen.

ETA: I did not say that voters will only vote for the person with the exact same faith. I said that the Christian majority in the US is not going to elect a non-Christian President. Talk about putting words into one's mouth...
