Does anyone have any experience with name changes in cultures with grammatical gender? One of my husband's relatives just married a girl from their home country on a K-1 visa who wants to take his name. It seems like much more trouble than it's worth to me, but if we can't dissuade her, my understanding is that they'll need to file the AOS with her married name and once she has her GC they can go to the Social Security office and get a card for her then under her married name. (She doesn't have one yet and doesn't need one urgently, as she doesn't plan to work immediately.)

However, they have the additional wrinkle of grammatical gender in their language, so to give an example that may be familiar to many of you, we'll say her maiden name is Anna Oblonskaya and her new husband is Alexei Karenin. She wants to change her name to Anna Karenina, not Anna Karenin. Does anybody know if it is possible to do this with the marriage certificate alone in the US or will the USCIS and/or Social Security kick up a fuss and require a court order?

Thanks in advance!

ETA: The state is Nebraska, by the way.

That might be tough to do. Nebraska is one of those states that assume you'll take your husband's last name if you want it, and not a take new different name. USCIS will probably accept it with no issues though, as they're much more aware of different culture's name change traditions after marriage. She can then get her SS card and state ID based on the EAD or green card.

I believe that's how Russians do the names for instance Maria Sharapova. Her father's name is Yuri Sharapov and her mother's name Elena Sharapova with added "a" as her married name. Now, talking about in the US, I don't think it is apply. Karenina it is not same as Karenin. You have to have court's name change to do that not only use marriage certificate as a prof of legal name change.

I actually think it might be possible without a court order. She would fill out the forms for her GC in the new married name, with female gender suffix. I tend to think USCIS would honor it. Then she would change with SSA.
