And, presumably, a national voter ID, if such a thing was allowed to exist.

Right, but it doesn't now.

Asking for ID at polls would not have prevented this guy from voting, as NB thinks it would be a magic bullet, it would just be a red herring.

Yeah. There's a clear need for a national ID.

Down with national ID! :protest:

You probably just said that because you know I would reply so.

Because it costs money to get one and black people have less money left over after they've bought their iPhones and this country has a history of using a 'poll tax' to dissuade black people from voting.

OK. I got my state id when I first landed here. Had something in the back like " DHS authorization" with the last date of my F1 I-20. So I assumed you can tell by that, that I was a non immigrant. It cost me $10 dollars. Granted I didn't eat like for 2 days. I guess that isn't the case for all states.

There are people who have not a dollar to spare and even they get to have the privilege of exercising their vote. You can't have a poll tax, even if the amount is something you consider affordable.

I'm supportive of a national voter ID, however. I just think it should come at zero point of service cost.

I think most states will provide them free of charge

My wife showed me here PI voter iD card. She was amazed that anyone could vote without an ID card.

Okay. That makes sense.

It is hard to care if I do not know the mans ultimate fate.. Are they going to take him of the voter rolls, fill out some paperwork, put him back on, then life goes on as normal?

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

So he committed voter fraud. So voter fraud does happen. I read that voter fraud hardly happens but I also read on here how some LPRs "mistakenly" registered to vote. It doesn't seem like its that hard to commit fraud if you are illegally here or even legally. So why is there such a push back on voter ids?

Fraud has to have intent. By definition it is deliberate act. Assuming his story is true, either he is a USC, or he believed himself to be.

Thus he voted illegally, but he didn't commit fraud. A small distinction, but one that is likely going to save his butt in the end.

That's my guess as to what will happen.

This is why I find his story so hard to believe. It's incredibly self serving while also being unlikely and probably impossible to prove. I'm struggling with whether or not it meets the standard of reasonable doubt.

Also, this raises the question of to what extent ignorance is a valid defense.

In fact this story only proves there to be no need for a national id. This man is living a productive life without any papers. For his service in the military alone, he gets my thumbs up. He is as much an American as the rest of us. He earned it.

It is hard to believe in today's world. However, back in the 60s and 70s there were no restricted SSN. All one needed was to apply for a SSN and you'd receive a card with no restrictions that you could use for work. That and any sort of ID was enough to get a DL, and quite frankly many don't need more that those two pieces of ID to build their lives. If you think of it, that is the way it should always be.

You can buy a decent fake SSN and green card for about 500 bucks in ATL. A really class a with a good SSN will cost more around 1400 bucks, or so I have been told
