Getting a social security number in USA

Hi,

I've just moved over to America on a K1 VISA. I'm not yet married as I've only been here a few days but I was wondering how I can go about getting a social security number? I need one to get a drivers permit apparently.

Do I need to get married before I can get a social security number?

Took my fiance with her passport/birth certificate and I think here NOA2 document. They didn't have any problems but labeled it not approved for work which is fine. Oh, and the I-94 print out from the internet.

I got mine 2-3 days after my arrival, took my passport and I-94 only. You might want to bring other proof according to the guide above

Its a good feeling to be getting these things But they might only issue a driving permit that expires when your I-94 expires if at all on a K1 visa.

You might have to wait until you get your NOA1 for your AOS. It differs from state to state.

This is correct. My wife's state ID card expires when the K1 visa expires. Oh well, the state ID and social helped us setup the bank account and credit card.

My wife's state ID ( Florida ) expires in 4 years and of course it is different from one state to one anothers.

You need to have I-94, passport and social security application to apply SSN.

For driver's license application, just be aware that the license will expire with your immigration docs, i.e. with your I-94. Or when you apply with an EAD/AP card, it will expire with it too. Same case as when you have your GC, until you have your citizenship.

You don't need to get married before applying for SSN.

Also, when you have the time , as it helps those who use the forum and also easier for people who intend to help with your concerns.

So just so I'm clear if I'm intending to live in America for good then there's really little point in getting a drivers licence until I'm married? You're saying if I get a social security number on a K1 and then use that to get my learners permit, when I pass my test it will only last about 90 days? Then I have to take another test?

Also I've changed my name since birth. I do not have my birth certificate or name change deeds here. Is that going to effect applying for a social security number over here in the states if my passport clearly states my name as it is now?

Should I even mention that my name has been changed as it might complicate things.

You SSN will be yours for life. But since you're on a K1, you won't be able to use it until with an EAD.

For non-US citizens, DMV in most states follow through on the validity indicated in the immigrant docs of the applicant. I still don't see a timeline, so do refer to my response above for the possible validity period. You can check with your local DMV if they have a different procedure, but from my experience and from most of what I have read here, this is the case.

DMV, like SSA, will follow on what is written on your passport/ US visa. Unless you are female and married, they can do a name change based from a marriage cert. I am not familiar with any other sort of name change though.
