It's been a year now since I filed my step-son's n-600 for the certificate of citizenship. It's still in an "initial review" status. He's a US citizen but can't do a lot without an SS #. I feel sorry for him as he would almost rather just go back to Canada at this point. At least he'd be able to work, drive and go to school.

It was filed at the Phoenix lockbox and the local office is Atlanta.

Is there a human being that can be spoken with? Does it seem that something is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

hi

why was an N600 filed for him, was his mother or father a USC before he turned 18, and he was a LPR?

he can only derive citizenship from USC biological or adopted USC parents.

What do you mean he has no ss number. he is a LPR, right? being a legal permanent resident he can get a ss number. why doesn't he have one?

Hi ... thanks for the reply. I spoke to an attorney who said that he needed a certificate of citizenship in order to get an SS number. He is a citizen. His mother is a USC the day that he was born in Canada. I would imagine that he's a LPR. I'm I missing something?

hi

is his mother in the US and did she file for him to come to the US?

even if he is under 18 and her mother is a USC, she has to file for him for a GC

he enter as a LPR and then his mom can file for a US passport and the N600, it shouldn't have taken that long. there must be something wrong.

the attorney is wrong, if he entered the country as a LPR he can get a SS number, and he can get a US passport, the N600 is optional

Interesting. This is so confusing. I feel sorry for the kid. Maybe I need to hire an attorney.

Mother is in the US. He was 13 when he came here. He's been here for almost 8 years and is about to turn 21. He's a HS graduate, but now is stuck and can't drive, go to school .... etc. He doesn't even have a legal ID. He's lucky in that he is working but get's a 1099 instead of being an employee.

So he needs a green card (LPR?) even if he's a US Citizen? Then he can get his SS# and live life?

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

wow so confusing ....????????????????????????????????????????????????

See what I'm saying.

He came into the US with the Mother proving that she was the Mother. Like I said he was 13. There's 2 more girls that are in the same boat. One is 18 who is also stuck ... and the 13 year old who still has some time yet.

Bottom line is that I was told that since he is a USC, we simply needed the certificate of citizenship and that would be the gateway to getting the SS #. We filed the N-600 and provided every single document that was required... not to mention the 600.00. It's now been a year. The poor kid probably will want to just go back to Canada.

Is there a human out there that can be spoken too at the USCIS, DHS .... etc ....?

If the Mother became a citizen prior to any of them being 18, they obtained US citizenship through her that day (whether they have a piece of paper yet or not). You can simply apply for a US passport for each of them by taking her (the mother's) proof of US citizenship to prove they are also US citizens. They will then have legitimate US passports and they can apply for SSN's and get moving on the rest of life.

Honestly if they've been here legally since the son was 13, they could have gotten him a SSN and he should have been able to work a long time ago. My daughter came with me and has had a SSN for 5 yrs and worked. She is becoming a citizen in her own right this year because she was 19 when I gained citizenship.

The N600 is a separate document which some people would say you do/ don;t need - that's another discussion which people love to debate about on VJ

Go get a lawyer.

The problem is that the kids never entered the US correctly.

As US citizens, they would need US passports to enter the US. Since they didn't have US passports, they must have enters by another means. That means was as Canadian tourists. That is why there are no US passports.

You have make many mistakes. Go get a lawyer.

The OP has not stated they entered the US incorrectly, not from what I see above. If the boy has been to school in the US and graduated on top of it, I suspect they are here legally. If all was done legally then it shouldn;t be difficult for them to obtain the children's US passports based on their mother gaining US citizenship.

Even undocumented children can attend and graduate high school. Schooling in itself does not prove any legal status in the US.

US citizens are required to have proof of US citizenship (i.e. uS passport) to enter the US.

Can you explain how these kids who don't have US passports enter the US?

True - although I know in our Virginia county you have to prove legal status in order to register the child.

Regardless - the OP didn't state they came illegally so hopefully he clarifies and understands this for himself
