Owner sprayed “Go back to China” at her own coffee shop

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Authorities said the owner of a coffee stand who claimed someone spray-painted "Go back to China" outside her business and set part of her shop on fire carried out the crime herself.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office had originally investigated the incident as a hate crime and arson on January 21. Deputies, however, arrested Coffee Break owner Jennifer Na on Friday.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Na with a gas can in hand. She was reportedly also seen reaching up to unplug her surveillance cameras before the crime occurred. On Wednesday, investigators told Na about the video.

“The Deputy Fire Marshall did an outstanding job with his investigation. Watched the security tape and unfortunately for the owner he saw her place a gas can on the table just prior to the camera being turned off,” said Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Chamberlin.

According to detectives, Na initially denied the accusation but later admitted it. The motive behind the crime was not clear.

Na faced charges of 2nd Degree Arson, 3rd Degree Malicious Mischief and False reporting.

Actually it does. She was specifically trying to implicate non-Chinese in the arson of her business. That is targeting based on race, which last I checked is racism. The only distinction here is that instead of targeting specific individuals because of their race, she targeted all members of an entire group because of their race.

Imagine if some specific suspect had been implicated in this arson and went through the stress of false accusations because of it. Odds are that person wouldn't be Chinese.

Imagine if some specific suspect had been implicated in this arson and went through the stress of false accusations because of it. Odds are that person wouldn't be Chinese.

Actually racism is a belief that ALL members of each race posses some characteristic that is specific to their race. The belief that one race can be superior or inferior to others based on that characteristic or ability.

What this woman did was try to take the heat off of herself, she did not claim her race as superior or another race as inferior.

She made it look as if racism was the motive for the crime but that does not make her actions racist.

So yes it is despicable to accuse people who views you don't like of committing a felony crime.. simply because you don't agree with their point of view be it pro-choice, peak-oil

I totally agree with you. What a said day for America to constantly show the world that we have soooo much growing to do.

To think, there were many Chinese people thinking someone hates them and wants them to go back to China.

What if there was some kind of Asian feud going on and the Police started harassing the Vietnamese over this incident.

Oh they exist alright.... we see the real ones on cell phone video everyday.

... and on occasion one of these "classic" hate crimes actually do happen, but jeez you have to wade through so many bogus ones to get to them.
