I travel very lightly, and have never had more than 2 bags... both being carry-on until they started making you check your bags for travelling with toothpaste, cologne, etc.

However I realize that women are wired differently, and my wife may be expecting to bring muchas maletas when she comes to the USA for the first time.

1. How much luggage should I expect her to want to bring?

2. How much does it cost to bring addtional luggage on the airplanes?

Thanks in advance...

Is she coming for good or is she coming for a visit? If a visit - how long will she be staying? Generally, you can travel with one carryon and one personal bag (ie. purse, computer case, etc.) plus 2 checked bags - depending on the carrier around 40 or 50 pounds each. Excess baggage rates vary by carrier as well. If she is planning on bringing a lot of extra items (ie. arriving permanently), she may wish to see about shipping the excess items. You may wish to check and see what the airline carrier she is travelling on says regarding excess baggage and rates - and yes, it is a good idea to check with her as well. One additional note - if she is travelling for a short visit then she shouldn't carry a lot of luggage as it may look like she is travelling to stay and that could risk being turned back by border authorities.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

When I went to Moldova this last time...I took a extra large Roll-on Must of been something like 36in high ...I left it for her..and I bought one of those duffel bags to come home with.. I'm hoping she will have this monster which cost me $25 extra because it was over the 50 lbs mark..loaded...and a carry on... She says she doesn't have many clothes.. and any electric stuff will stay because it's 220v and we are 115v in the states..I've already starting buying her the girlie stuff ..hahahah

So I'm guessing it would be up to each SO and how she is wired...:)

Why don't you ask hyour wife how much luggage she plans to bring?

Of course I will ask my wife what she intends to bring.

However, I am not the stereotypical male who doesn't ask for directions. If I'm lost, I pull over and ask someone how to get to my destination.

I thought it would be a good idea to request responses from people with more travel experience and/or pricing knowledge concerning this matter, BEFORE I talk to my wife. My wife has never travelled far before, and I would like to be able to talk to her more intelligently.

Also, being a man, I thought I might get some insight from women on this board as to what kind of things to expect from a female perspective. That way, I can be more sensitive to my wife's viewpoint if it is different than mine, because I will be concerned primarily with facts and figures... whereas she may have different thoughts altogether.

Is she coming for good or is she coming for a visit?

She is coming to stay permanently.

Maybe no matter what you would like to do...the airlines has a different opinion on how much you can bring...I'm sure there is a baggage limit...

And you don't want the bags to much over 50lbs... because the rates go up fast.. I've seen one guy had like a 75 lbs bag and they wanted like an extra $140 or something like that..

So as much as you want to be a good husband...She will also need to set herself a limit...on what she brings.. but the plus for her is..She gets new stuff.. :)

Tell her to pack a baggage of clothes so she can survive at least 1 month.

Then tell her to send rest of her things that she want to bring in a big box.

For example decorate things that she loves from her homecountry.

That's the way I will do it.

I'm afraid there's far too little input on your wife to make a stab at your question. Is she a 'girlie girl' with six thousand pairs of shoes and a supply of make-up that weighs a metric ton? If so, pay for shipping. Is she the sort that has 3 pairs of shoes and thinks cosmetics are dumb? If so, she may be alright with the baggage allowances. Is she somewhere in between the 2 extremes? She'll probably want to ship out of season gear, and bring what she's going need for the first 4-6 weeks on the plane.

I am pretty sure she falls into the 1st category, or is somewhere in the middle. I don't believe I've ever personally known a woman in my life in the 2nd category. Even guys have a lot of "stuff" that they accumulate in their lives that is important to them, although it may not be clothing.

When you say "shipping", are you talking like FedEx, DHL, etc., and it sounds like you are implying that it is much cheaper than the airline luggage charges?

Yes, I'm referring to some way of mailing her stuff. The airline is going to charge excess fees, and those are steep. As a rule of thumb, slow shipping is cheaper shipping. I'm totally unfamiliar with South America and wouldn't presume to suggest a shipping company, maybe someone in the South America specific forum could give you some suggestions?

When I moved from Puerto Rico to Missuri I brought dos maletas grandes and a duffel. On the 2 maletas there were clothes, and on the duffel some CD's, my make up and photos. :content:

This may sound crazy but I would recommend for her to bring her jeans or as many pants as she has. Why? Because we, as latinas, have our pants tailored for us and the sizes fit different (I am serious, I go every year to visit my family & by the way buy clothes LOL). I have a Colombian friend and her family sends her jeans when she needs them once in a while...

Good luck!!

I brought 5 suitcases with me (2 for me, 2 for my son) and paid $50 for the extra one. They can be up to 22kg each (some airlines allow a little more, check with the specific airline) and no one bag can weigh more than around 30kg, simply because these bags have to be lifted by another human being.

Most airlines have details on their websites on how much they charge for extra baggage AND the rate at which the cost goes up.

I also have 14 boxes of stuff being shipped over by a baggage company.
