Hi,

I have been reading and learning from this forum, thank you for all the topics and discussions, I hope to contribute.

Just to explain my situation, I am a US citizen, my wife is Syrian living in Saudi Arabia, and that's where the marriage took place. Right now we're waiting to hear NOA2 from USCIS, but I have a couple of questions regarding the documents that NVC requires for my wife (the beneficiary), just to be prepared ahead of time, so here they are:

1- My wife is from Syria, she lives in Saudi Arabia, and she's not sure if she can obtain a certified copy of her birth certificate. Her birth certificate is in Syria, and you know how the situation is over there. What other options do we have to replace the certified birth certificate requirement?

2- She lived in Syria within the past 5 years, but she's been living in Saudi Arabia for like 3 years. Does she need police records from Syria? Or only in her current residence country (Saudi Arabia)?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Unfortuneatly she needs to get her birth certificate somehow. She does not need a police certificate from Syria simply because they're not required.

Thanks!

I found this page that talks about NVC requirements, and from what I understand, a police record from Syria is not required, because she has been living in Saudi Arabia for more than 6 months. Is that correct?

So I guess she needs police records from Saudi Arabia?

She'll need a police clearance for every country she's lived at for 6 months or more. NVC just doesn't require clearances from some countries - Syria is an example. So yeah, she'll need a police clearance certificate from Saudi.

No a police record is not required from Syria because they're not reliable. So the US doesn't require the police certficate.

If she had lived anywhere else for 6 months or more after the age of 16 she should need a police certificate for each place.

for instance... If I had lived in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada each for over 6 months I'd need a police certificate from each place.

But some countries do not give reliable certificates or they're not available (sometimes to non-citizens and sometimes if you don't live there currently, for example.)

This is what it says for Syria:

Police/Prison Records

Available: No, as of 3 July 2013.

On the subject of her birth certificate does she have one of these documents?

Alternate Documents: 1- Identity card. 2- Family card. 3- Individual Civil Extract.

Wow thank you guys this is so helpful!

She has a card that shows all her sisters and brothers, and their birth dates, so I guess that's #2 the family card, I believe that's what she said. But it's an original document. Do you have any suggestions?

Looks like it's a viable alternative to the birth certificate. The only way to know is to ask the NVC once your case is there.

Or ask in your regional forum.

This is something new for Syria. 2 years ago my friends husband immigrated from Syria, it was hell on Earth for him to get his PCC, and was was living in Syria and interviewed in Amman.

To the OP she needs the PCC from every country she has lived in for 6 months or more after turning the age of 16, with the exception of Syria.
