We have supermarkets here in the UK who follow the Walmart model and sell electronic goods for prices so low that it's hard to see how the manufacturer could buy the base materials for let alone make a profit on the finished article.

I don't think that's about supply and demand, I think it's a deliberate strategy to flood countries with cheaply made products to undermine our economies.

So who is taking the financial hit for these under priced goods if this is what's going on?

Walmart pays on average $10.50 per hour to it's employees. What do you consider to be a good wage for a retail worker?

These so called "exploited workers" have a much darker future without stores like Walmart than they do with stores like Walmart.

Teddy did you read the article? Walmart enjoyed 17 billion in profit. They pay most of their workers less than 25k a year that is 825,000 people who are being paid at the poverty line. We already know that most people who get welfare are the working poor, mainly single mothers. If Walmart paid $14 an hour that would be better.

This is a perfect example of why we need unions. When companies don't do right by their employees, they need representation.

What do you mean by so called exploitative workers. Do you realize that in these unregulated markets there is what amounts to slave labor. In China, Bangladesh, Malaysia the working conditions are deplorable. Children are being exploited. Hell even with such big companies like Apple in China they put suicide nets around the buildings so people don't jump to their deaths.

Can't believe you dismiss the fact that sweat shops don't exist.

Does everyone realize that this country no longer produces button down shirts? Your dress shirts and casual shirts there are 0 manufacturers left in this country. Why? Because companies can pay some 9 yr old pennies a day to sew buttons on a shirt made in Bangladesh and ship here to sell for $60

Apple makes higher profits than Walmart, exploits those same Asian workers, pays they retail employees wages that are inline with the industry and sells high priced, high margin goods at stores like, get this, Walmart. Where's the outrage?

Could Walmart afford to pay it's workers more? Ofcourse. I'm sure the same case could be made for any successful business. I wish my employer would pay me more too. One thing to consider is that these are retail positions, they don't take any special skills, anyone can do them. Walmart pays above minimum wage to all of it's employees. Why is that such a bad thing? I'm not saying that $10 an hour is right, I'm saying it is what the global market will bear at this time.

The exploited workers you speak of would be in much worse shape if not for stores like Walmart. They would be forced into prostitution, the drug trade and many other illegal activities to make ends meet.

I'm outraged, then again, I'm always outraged about something.

There is outrage. In fact Apple said they were looking into the working conditions of the sub company that assembles their iPhone. I've read reports that they don't even let the people leave that they have cots set up in the hallways for them to sleep. There is plenty of outrage at Apple.

They pay wages that all retail stores pay. Many people want to work for them wages. That makes it a good wage. If any want to buy a home and have two cars and raise kids and place them in private schools by working for any retail store then they are unrealistic. Retail stores have always been a stepping stone till better comes along. Raise the wages and there will be less hiring.

They do not pay good wages. Have to disagree with you there.
Yes they dominate the retail sector but at what cost to the American public.

Apple has always said this and will always do so. Yet they keep their manufacturing plants knowing this is going on.
