They would have inserted a temporary green card into her passport, she can use that until green card arrives, also she should have got her social security number already, to allow her to gain employment. Seems a bit odd that they would want to see the actual green card when she has the other stuff.

Show them the I-551 stamp in the passport and this http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/pressrelease/adit_10_21_04.pdf. And this. http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-9.pdf

Look at List A # 3 on the list if acceptable documents.

Also, it's unlawful for the employer to demand another document including the plastic green card.

The employer is violating the law.

This is useful info. Temporary green card is this something that is followed at all POE....? also how long this is valid for and can one travel in / out of USA with this temp GC, while waiting for plastic GC?. Thank you

Sounds like this HR person needs a bit more training as to what an acceptable document is for the I-9 form. They do exist. I had an HR person insist that I show them my SSC when I was using my US passport. I told her that 1) the passport is a list A document and stands by itself and 2) my SSC is 1000 miles away in a safety deposit box.

Have you system show them the I-551 stamp in her passport and tell the HR person that the I-551 is the document number of the GC. Also have her offer to show her physical GC when it arrives.

Good luck,

Dave

When a visa is granted at the Embassy in your Country, they retain your native passport, this is processed and a temporary visa is inserted onto one of the pages, see example of a 2011 temporary green card attached. Once they have inserted the temp. green card, they courier the passport back to you (after you have paid for this service of course), you can use for one year, I discovered it is valid for one year from date of first entry into the USA, not date of issuance.

Your plastic (Permanent) Green Card is created and sent to the USA address you provided on all your forms, this is generally about a month or so after arrival, however mine never arrived (lost in post it seems), as such I had to arrange and pay for a new one, although this did not stop me from being able to work, as temp. visa was still valid.

Soon after arrival in the USA, you receive a letter at the USA address you provided on your forms, to welcome you to the USA and soon after that or same time your Social Security Number (SSN) arrives, allowing you to work, open bank account etc.

Hope this info helps.
