Hi there,

I will be moving to the US on 30th March and have begun thinking about utilities.

My current mobile phone contract is very good. It is with a company called GiffGaff and they offer me 300 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet usage for £12 per month. Likewise communicating abroad is also cheap. When I text my fiancée in the US it is 8p per text. It is a sim card only contract as I have my own unlocked handset. The GiffGaff is a user powered company, which is why it is so cheap.

Does anyone know of anything similar in the US or have any experience with cheap US mobile phone providers?

I'm with Giff Gaff and absolutely love them. I pay £10 a month for 500 mins, unlimited texts and 1gb data. I'm going to miss it!

I was researching prices and found that Sprint were a bit cheaper ($80 a month vs avg. $100 a month from other networks, based on an iphone search).

I don't really use my phone too much, but will need a smartphone when I'm there to take advantage of the gps. I'm probably going to get a sat-nav for the car too but I always worry if it breaks down then I would be lost without a smartphone's gps! I'm hopeless at remembering road names etc.

I look forward to others replying with suggestions about networks :)

P.S. Congrats on the approval! I forgot to say it when you answered a post of mine the other day :s

I know sprint has the no contract, $60 a month unlimited everything plan.. but gotta remember taxes and such rolleyes.gif . I know you don't get the best network coverage with sprint, but it really depends on your preference of what you prefer. I say start off with a pay monthly (No contract) with a company and see how you like it from there.. I know you get can get discounts off your phone bills if you are an employee for so many companies.. worth a shot!

I had heard that Sprint were a bit useless with network coverage too. I don't think anyone I know is with them, and my fiance is with AT&T. He seems to like them, and never had a problem with them, so I may eventually go with them.

I just hate how expensive phones can be over there!

Thank you all for your responses!

This one looks like the winner so far, as it is the most comparable with what I have in the UK.

I am going to be living in Brooklyn, NY, so I am taking it for granted that coverage won't be a problem.

Coverage shouldn't be a problem, but there unlimited is 2.5 gb of high speed then unlimited low speed. If your other half has a contract there are some really good family plans out there.

Oh man yeah I totally forgot about that. I studied in Georgia in 2007 for 5 months and still wasn't used to that when I left!

She uses AT&T, and they have 'family plans' over there, so it's all on one bill rather than two that they have in the UK!

I would look into T-Mobile as well. You can use your unlocked phones and choose pre or post paid. Coverage is also better than Sprint.

Cheers.

T-mobile is rubbish over here, and no one I know in the states really uses it! But I think it depends on the person really! :)

My husband and I both use t-mobile. Works great. I get 4G most of the time plus they do international roaming for no extra now.
