Serious question, why would someone dealing in illegal guns obey the new law if they don't obey the current law? And even if every gun sold from today forward was a smart gun, what about the other 300 million out there? I don't think that a recall is going to work like it does for the automotive industry. Just a thought.

Most illegal guns are at one point purchased legally, then sold on the street. If all new guns were made with the smart gun concept, it would not be possible to sell them without first transferring the smart gun technology to the new owner and it would not be possible for the wrong person to use them.

There is no perfect solution, but it needs to start somewhere. This smart gun concept seems to be the most reasonable solution that does not really impede the 2nd amendment.

The big question is can it be fired if you need it at a critical moment. Does it run on a battery? Batteries fail Will it require me to have 2 guns in the house.. One for myself and one for my wife ?What kind of cost would there be and .could you CC it . If not are you willing to permit open carry?.. Is it EMP proof? Will it work at -30 or 110F''' Who will pick up the cost to repair it and who is able to repair this?We all know how good computers work.

I think a few good points are brought up here. Will it be fail proof? Will it work with greasy or dirty hands? Gloves? Multiple users, as in a family? Temperature extremes and less than favorable conditions? Will it function instantly? Is the tech good enough that law enforcement would trust it?

How good is is the tech and what is required to maintain it? Very valid questions, IMO.

No. I was not. You don't like when people put words in your mouth, so don't put words in mine.

I was responding to LIB's comment about how collecting guns is manly. Novembro said that they collect Legos or something and LIB made a disparaging remark about how Brits like to collect "less manly" things than Americans.

I said it's sad when someone would use any inanimate object to make them feel more manly.

Please pay attention before trying to tell me what I'm talking about.

Well slap my face and call me Zsa Zsa! I apologise, indeed I did take your comment out of context. Might have been all that testosterone leaking outta my monitor as I was reading that part of the thread, sorry Penny.

there is no technology that is immune to subversion.

Perhaps being more clear when posting should be a goal then.

But OTOH, I see a LOT of times when people put words into others' keyboards. Happens a lot here, and usually it is the 'baiters.

It sounds like it would be ridiculously expensive. I'd just ban them or have a per person/household limit and hold the owner responsible for any crimes committed using their guns if they weren't previously reported stolen.

Collectors can choose which of their guns will be deactivated.

I agree with your premise, a limit on how many guns each person or each household can own, would be a good idea in my opinion, but that will never happen. As we've seen the 2nd amendment is pretty much teflon. I realistically do not see any type of major changes ever happening to the 2nd amendment. Having a smart gun program will at least help the problem going forward, and it doesn't impede the 2nd amendment in any drastic way.

Oh I agree, the second amendment is Teflon. As much as people like to say it is a freedom, it's more of a constitutionally protected gap in the law that gives crazies the right to indulge in violent anarchy while the NRA and it's supporters shrug their shoulders and claim that somehow it's a freedom worth protecting.

If the founding fathers were to sit down today and rewrite the constitution, the 2nd amendment would probably not even exist, there is no need for it in current day America. It was written in completely different times under completely different circumstances. How people can claim with a straight face that the intentions of the founding fathers over 200 years ago were meant to hold true today in regards to firearms, is beyond me.

Liberal revisionist history is so great to read. Did you attend school here or perhaps Briton?. Liberal logic fail

No apologies necessary. Novembro is a chick.

Those comments you quoted aren't really about guns, they are about the ignorance and foolish comments made by the VJ resident gun aficionados. And the reason why we call them aficionados is because we are no longer allowed to call them gun nuts. So the word aficionado is not meant to be a compliment, it has nothing to do with their knowledge of guns.

I'm not sure which posts of mine you refer to when you say I have a disdain for guns, I simply don't. I'm in favor of the 2nd amendment and the right to bear arms, and have stated that here numerous times, but I want to see it more tightly regulated. The only thing I have disdain for in regards to guns is the foolishness on display here by the so called gun aficionados. There are a few responsible and rational gun owners here, but mostly not. It's crazy to see just how much in love some folks are with a weapon whose main purpose is to kill.

Thanks for the further edification, Teddy. I know there are gun nuts out there. But to me, a gun nut is someone who acts nuts (crazy, unstable, mentallly inept) while holding a gun. That's not how the term has been used here, to be sure. Some here speak out as if to say, "If you own a gun, you are a gun nut. If you support gun ownership, you are a gun nut!" It gets old.

I own guns, I support such. Thus far, have never shot anyone, and have done my best as an instructor to properly behave myself around them as well as to properly train others in their intended use. I know it's hard to keep all of us "wacko" gun owners in the proper pigeonholes, and wide-stroke brushes tend to get used in this as well as many other discussions. But I unequivocally state for the record, I am not a nut, I am an aficianado in the truest sense of the word.
