Hi Everyone,

My window for citizenship is now open anytime now. My question is: Do I really need to renew my Philippine passport that is expiring 2 months from now? Does my Phil passport needed for Citizenship application?

Would appreciate your help.

You absolutely do need all your passports, expired and current, for the naturalization process, because they may want to look at the CBP entry stamps. That said, it's not a problem if your passport is expired. Just have it with you.

Still, I don't know if Philippine law allows you to keep it or if you automatically forfeit it when you become a US citizen, so if you do get to be a dual citizen of the USA and the Philippines, you should renew your Philippine password anyway so you can travel home without trouble.

If you are asking if you need an non expired passport during the application process then no. As long you have the passports with you then it is enough.

I applied for citizenship last January 2....my Philippine passport will expire on June 2014....I submitted a copy of my passport when I applied for citizenship to show the stamp when I visited Philippines last year for 2 weeks. I don't think they need your Philippine passport as main requirement for citizenship application. Im planning of renewing my Philippine passport still because I wish to keep my Philippine citizenship by applying dual citizenship after Im done with N-400 =)

Until you get a US passport, in order for you to travel you will still need an unexpired Philippine passport. So, in my opinion, it would be in your best interest to renew you Phil. passport.

First shock was after long delays in our AOS, weren't married two years yet, do wife only received a conditional green card. Led me to ask, what's next, IO said the I-751 and N-400, wrote those down, and downloaded these forms and instructions the next day. With the N-400, we had to log our trips, nice to know before hand, so kept our flight itineraries in a folder. This is for residency requirements for any trip outside of the US that lasted over 24 hours, they all did.

For the fun of it, tried to match those dates in her expired and current passport, was almost impossible with half stamps, stamps on top of each other, and scattered all over the place. But she had to bring in her passports and said her IO just opened them and glanced for a second and said they were okay.

Stepdaughter was different, her biological father refused to give her permission for a new passport, so she couldn't make any trips, and her passport expired shortly after she came here, so couldn't post any trips. But her IO wanted to see it anyway.

DOS agreement with Colombia says wife must maintain her Colombian passport, they call it dual naturalization, its dual citizenship. While she can enter Colombia with it, can't leave Colombia because there is no tourist visa in it. So the only way she can leave is to show her US passport as well.

She felt she was going against her USCIS by doing so, had to renew her Colombian citizenship, $$$$$, since she left as a child to get that passport. What can I say? We are no longer dealing with the USCIS, but with the DOS now. Would be nice if they got their act together.

Thanks everyone for getting back with me.

Here's another concern: Since my passport will be expiring soon ( April 2014) and I am illegible to apply for my citizenship now ( currently 10 years PR), however I am so busy ( reviewing) and no time to gather all the information for citizenship. I would probably applying before the end of the year.I know I cannot travel outside the US with expiring passport or expire passport.

Here's my question:. Just worried that my passport is expired maybe few months before I can apply for citizenship. Does it safe for me to stay in the US with expired passport but have a 10 years PR?

I am taking my exam by September in Chicago so I might as well renew at the same time at Chicago consulate since it is too far for me just to renew my passport ( I live in Minnesota).

You mean before you apply for citizenship your passport was already expired for 5 years?

It doesn't matter if your passport is expired or how long it has been expired. USCIS may want to see the entry stamps in your passport to corroborate the information you give them when you fill out N-400 (the part where they ask you to list the trips you took outside of the US) -- that's why you need to have your passport, but it's not a problem if it's expired.

Your home country's passport is only needed to identify you and just to make sure about the dates for travels you had in the past. USCIS doesn't really care if your passport is current or expired since they don't even ask you for a copy of it when you send your N400. So you don't have really to renew it especially if it costs to much. Remember you have to pay 680 for the application and if you need to travel outside the US you will have to pay at least 140 dollars for a passport. Good luck.
