Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, sentenced to death for his role in 148 killings in 1982, will have his sentence carried out by Sunday, NBC News reported Thursday. According to a U.S. military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Saddam will be hanged before the start of the Eid religious holiday, which begins at sundown Saturday.

As someone who has not been party to one of Saddam's atrocities, it's a little questionable to me why his death would be enjoyable to you...

Its naive IMO to suggest that every atrocity that took place under the regime should be laid solely at the feet of Saddam Hussein and a few high level ministers.

Saddam has been tried for one specific atrocity, the verdict has pronounced and sentence will be (apparently) carried out before they have completed the trial on the second. What will happen after his execution? Will the Iraqi judicial system actively investigate ALL of the atrocities or will they draw a line under the whole affair? Given the procedural questions that have been raised over the fairness of the trial it doesn't seem hopeful.

What I think will happen is that the other crimes committed by his regime will be swept under the carpet and won't be investigated. So the officer who kidnaps a woman from a market so that he and his friends can gang rape her - will get off scot free because Saddam's hanging absolves him of any guilt for that crime.

This is the reason that the trial should have been conducted in the International Criminal Court, and not by a fledgling government - to properly investigate the full extent of the crimes of this regime, including those carried out by low level soldiers and officers who were not acting under official sanction.

While I have not been a party to one of his "atrocities" directly, I have been involved indirectly thanks to his involvement and shenanigans over the years. Dating back to the first Iraq war when I was serving in Europe and he decided it would be a great idea to invade Kuwait and threaten to go further. Of course, this lead to deployments for me and my colleagues, even leading to the eventual death of some fellow co-workers. So, while I haven't witnessed one of his atrocities, you can imagine why I harbor ill feelings towards this malcontent. Thanks

Iraqi officials have said that Saddam's final moments will be videotaped by the government.

"We will video everything," National Security adviser Mouffak al Rubaie said. "All documentation will be videoed. Taking him from his cell to the execution is going to be videoed, and the actual execution will be documented and videoed."
