From what I understand with a K1 visa getting a SSN should be as easy as applying....or do we have to wait for adjustment of status to come through? We have filed AOS and the relase for work but haven't heard anything back yet. WE went to SS office and applied for a SSN for my husband and they said he should get it no problem, then today we recieved mail at the house saying they are unable to issue a SSN for him due to visa staus. Does anyone have any info on this?

How much time was left on the I-94 before you applied for the SSN? Even if there was time enough on it, I have heard of the SSA sending it off and waiting so long that the I-94 is no longer valid anymore. In that case, you need to wait for the EAD to get the SSN.

did u get married before u apply for ss number, we applied yesterday and the guy thought we we married already and said we cant receive a ss number right now, because once you are married u are no longer in the k1 status you have to wait till u get your EAD and go back, I told him we are not married yet he thought the birth cert was marriage license

Go back and talk to someone else. Ask for a supervisor if you need to. Even if you were married, you are still eligible to get the SSN, Getting married does not cancel out your K-1 status. Man, so many SSA workers really need training. It seems too difficult to find any of them that know their own jobs.

if the I-94 is still active with at least 2 weeks left on the expiration ,

go in!

bring:

1. passport

2. I-94

3. [optional] birth certificate

and that's it!

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
