Please, tell me your opinions what is best to hire a lawyer or do it yourself. We have a lawyer in our K-1 visa but Im thinking if we should still hire a lawyer when filling for Adjustment of Status once at the US already.

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions.

It's a lot easier with this website and the internet as a whole. I don't think anyone needs a lawyer unless they have complicated issues or are just very bad at paperwork.

It's like taxes, but more simple even. Just read the directions, fill out the forms carefully and you'll be fine. No need to give your money to a lawyer. IMHO

Gonna try again.

I don't think a lawyer is needed for a "uncomplicated" K-1 application. I used this website and I have a book, " Fiance & Marriage Visas, A Couple's Guide To US Immigration". Things have gone well so far.

The question you ask is not a simple one. From my experience and what I read here, I would say hire an attorney if you dont know what you are doing. Also, I say hire an attorney if you have a complex case.

For me the decision was easy. I hired an attorney to help guide me. I could have filled out the forms, but my case had some red flags that needed to be addressed. Also I wanted to get started early with my petition.

So hiring a lawyer is a personal decision. Take you time and weigh the pros and cons. Make the decision on your needs and circumstance. I would like to add that I will not use an attorney for AOS. My fiance will be with me. We can take our time to do the work (paperwork and /or appeals) ourselves. We will keep our attorney's contact information handy if any problem arise that is too big to handle.

I think I was late filing for AOS:

07/27/07: Mailed AOS papers to Chicago mailbox.

08/02/07: AOS papers received in Chicago.

We didn't hire a lawyer, just follow the instruction...it's easy...don't waste your time and money unless there are some redflags to your documents. Good luck and Merry Christmas

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. As I have said, my fiance hired a lawyer and it is really expensive but we cant back out anymore because he hired their service already before I saw this kind of helpful site. As for my experience, I know my interview date already, but they havent send notice yet to my fiance about it. I told my man not to hire another lawyer or retain our lawyer's service when filling for AOS, but I dont know if he will do it. I have gained lots of information here already and able to share my knowledge to those who will start their case.

We thought our case was complicated because it is our first time to file this kind of case and heard about here in my country how hard to get a visa for US.

Immigration is the biggest step I could ever take in my intire life and no place for mistakes.

After my opinion this case is so importent, that it have to be supported by a lawyer.

I do compare it to a courtcase where the decision is in others hands.

I wanna win this case and be together with the love of my life.

I felt that hiring for a legal counsel is a personal preference and a question of comfort level in going through the documentations and time spent on the subject K-1. I think that if one can follow simple instructions and research through someone else's priceless journey, it will be worth putting your best effort and then again save some $$$. Indeed this web site has so much informations, and it is the moral support such as the virtue of waiting and patience that help the waiters on USCIS queing line.

Again, if time is an issue of doing the paperworks and personal comfort level will be better with a lawyer then go for it, but I can tell you that you can do it yourself with all the help you can get from this site. Good luck. Maligayang Pasko.

I really agree with you that this VJ is a very good support.

And with no complications you can easily do it yourself

In our case it started very normal, but went out to be with alot of complications that we didn't know we should get.

That's the reason we are so happy we hired a lawyer.

So every case is very individuel and hard to say if you need professionel help

Thank you for wishing us good luck

Sweetie

If I can do it without mistakes....Anyone can... I'm the guy who doesn't read instrucions putting things together...doesn't ask directions....Doesn't read up on the drivers manual..and flukes the first time..everytime... hhahaaha

But then this time..I'm the guy in love...that read everything here..and followed the instructions to the "T" and when in doubt asked questions..

Like someone else said... it's like your taxes 1040.. Just read the questions.. also you have good examples of the forms filled out here....And you can ask for help.... Save your money for the plane flight or wedding..

BUT... if you have something weird..something usual in your case..and maybe even kids..I might hire a Attorney...

Please, tell me your opinions what is best to hire a lawyer or do it yourself. We have a lawyer in our K-1 visa but Im thinking if we should still hire a lawyer when filling for Adjustment of Status once at the US already.

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions.

When we were talking of immigration visa before, we thought that getting a lawyer is the best choice. But after reading all the post and everyone's experienced about how their visa journey went out, I can say that it is just so easy, just have to learn how to wait and be patient.

I know our lawyer is excellent in their service because they have a thousands of testimonials of all the couples they able to help with regards to k-1 visa and other cases, but if only I will rely on their information, I guess, I still didnt know my schedule of interview yet if I didnt call our embassy.

Im just glad that I did.

Your currentl lawywer isn't continuing to help with AOS? I hope you didn't pay much for him. Mine is helping with everything, if I decide I need guidance or have any questions. But we will try to do as much as possible on our own/with the help of VJ.

Personally I think the AOS is a little easier to get through than the petition. And now that you have all these wonderful VJ people and guides, I think you can get by without the lawyer. Definitely would not pay extra for one unless you have some issue that needs to be cleared.

my_destiny,

Depends on the specific details of your situation and how much work you are willing to put in to learn what you need to know.

Have a consultation with an immigration attorney to review your situation, ask questions, and get some tips. Then, based on the information that you have gotten, decide whether you want to go forward on your own or hire the attorney to work for you.
