Sure, but that is but a drop in the bucket compared to the extra gun violence we have. The gun violence that the abundance of firearms - and the easy availability of firearms for anyone who wants one - this abundance brings about. Again, the higher the gun ownership rate in a state, the higher the homicide rates.

The topic at hand is legal gun owners deterring crime. I'm reporting all of you for going off topic

The topic is the opinion on the matter offered by Detroit's police chief. So the question at hand is whether more guns would reduce crime in Detroit. The research suggests that more guns result in more - not less - gun violence.

I would challenge you that most parts of the country could and would form their own "watch" or actual security force if no other were available.... this is exactly what we see during natural disasters.

Why has that same spirit not prevailed in Detroit or Camden?

A. Families build good citizens which build good communities.

IF you want to fix the Black areas, you have to recreate the black family.

I wasn't talking about black areas, I was talking about poor areas, the two aren't synonymous.

Look at Mexico: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1334711/Unarmed-female-Mexican-police-chief-gunned-way-work-latest-drug-gang-hit.html

The conservatives who scream about the bootstrap method is a surefire way to fix everything don't have to deal with the issues that plague any poor community.

I guess the long term result of everyone being armed would be less crime, I mean it's kinda hard to have an active crime rate when everyone is dead.

Call me crazy, but I still think jobs, education and lack of poverty would solve a lot more issues that arming everyone and letting them shoot it out.

That is true. The study I've quoted here that found gun violence to increase with gun ownership rates only looked at 3 decades. Probably takes a bit longer for the positive effects to show.

I fully agree Marvin. Unfortunately that requires a lot of money and an actual effort by the gov't and community alike. Not something I see happening in the near future.

The Police Chief for Detroit says that the crime stats decreased in 2013 and I think he's trying to say, also, that gun owners in Detroit are the reason for the decrease in crime.

Yes?No ? Is that the gist of it?

I just wish one side would make the move. But both seem too content to change the status quo.

It's much easier to sit back and point fingers.

Way too easy, maybe one day both sides will see this and make the change.

Ask what you like, that isnt the point. More people have died at the barrel of a gun in the US, you can spin it however you want, although I very much doubt the US has fewer gun related murders.

I don't have any need for bumper stickers. I live in a safe town, have never been a victim of violence - gun related or otherwise. It's only in the US that people seem to see carrying a gun as being somehow essential to daily life. Its perverse.

Your gun culture kills thousands year on year.

In 2012, over 34,000 people were killed by vehicles, about 3X those killed by guns. Perhaps we should push for a vehicle ban. I hope your strong feelings against guns continue in that same vein, and you sell your car(s) very soon.
