Legal Gun Owners Can Deter Crime, Says Detroit Police Chief

anuary 3, 2014

Detroit— If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Thursday.

Urban police chiefs are typically in favor of gun control or reluctant to discuss the issue, but Craig on Thursday was candid about how he’s changed his mind.

“When we look at the good community members who have concealed weapons permits, the likelihood they’ll shoot is based on a lack of confidence in this Police Department,” Craig said at a press conference at police headquarters, adding that he thinks more Detroit citizens feel safer, thanks in part to a 7 percent drop in violent crime in 2013.

Florida currently has more concealed-carry permit holders than any other state, with 1,269,021 issued as of May 14, 2014

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

Did you know (or care) that since the Newtown massacre that there have been over 12,000 American deaths by firearm?

And did you know that most of those occurred where there are more firearms?

Objectives. We examined the relationship between levels of household firearm ownership, as measured directly and by a proxy—the percentage of suicides committed with a firearm—and age-adjusted firearm homicide rates at the state level.

Methods. We conducted a negative binomial regression analysis of panel data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web-Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting Systems database on gun ownership and firearm homicide rates across all 50 states during 1981 to 2010. We determined fixed effects for year, accounted for clustering within states with generalized estimating equations, and controlled for potential state-level confounders.

Results. Gun ownership was a significant predictor of firearm homicide rates (incidence rate ratio = 1.009; 95% confidence interval = 1.004, 1.014). This model indicated that for each percentage point increase in gun ownership, the firearm homicide rate increased by 0.9%.

Conclusions. We observed a robust correlation between higher levels of gun ownership and higher firearm homicide rates. Although we could not determine causation, we found that states with higher rates of gun ownership had disproportionately large numbers of deaths from firearm-related homicides.

But then again, water is wet.

Randomly I had a look on another site for the UK comparison. In 2011 there were apparently 146 guns deaths (including murders, suicides etc.).

146 is a long way from 12,000...

At the rate of the US, the UK figure would be 2,400 - or roughly 16 times what it actually is.

But again, water is wet.

Simplistic stuff like this leads to simplistic solutions...... which result in more deaths.

You guys have already turned pockets of this country into killing zones..... we don't need you to "fix" it.

You have had your way in Detroit and now look at it, it sounds like the "New sherif in town" is on the right track.

We will help him evolve on this issue one step at a time.

I've heard it all before. The facts are what they are, more guns = more deaths.

No what you have is a retarded point which in some Seattle coffee shop sounds profound, out where I live we dig a little deeper.

We would ask questions like-

1. How many of those deaths were self inflicted by their own free will.

2. How many of those folks would have found another way?

2.a. How many were justified killings by cops or citizens?

3 With 300,000,000 guns in this country, is it logical to compare us to a little place like the UK with no such gun-culture?

4. If Obama had his way and we started collecting all the guns, what percentage would be recovered?

4 b. If we can't locate 13 million illegals who are out at McD's how do you propose we recover 3x as many guns out of closets?

5 Where would the unrecovered end up?

6.Would people be compensated and where would this money come from? Would historic guns be destroyed?

6.Would civil unrest cause more deaths from people defending their "Rights".

7.Would crime surge with the population unarmed? (Like detroit)

Fit that on your bumper sticker.

Ask what you like, that isnt the point. More people have died at the barrel of a gun in the US, you can spin it however you want, although I very much doubt the US has fewer gun related murders.

I don't have any need for bumper stickers. I live in a safe town, have never been a victim of violence - gun related or otherwise. It's only in the US that people seem to see carrying a gun as being somehow essential to daily life. Its perverse.

Your gun culture kills thousands year on year.
