My Dad got me started on viewing some of his favorite all-time movies.

With Netflix, it's been great because I simply place the movie on my queue.

So far in the last month I've seen for the first time...

- On The Waterfront

- A Streetcar Named Desire

- All About Eve

- The Razor's Edge (1946 version with Tyrone Power)

I really enjoyed the last two - the sound and picture quality is superb!

Does anybody have any all time favorite old classics that they would recommend? :star:

"Whatever happened to Baby Jane"

"South Pacific" (if you dont' mind musicals)

"Wuthering Heights" (My absolute favorite....Laurence Olivier version)

"We are the real countries,

Not the boundaries drawn on maps,

With the names of powerful men.

That's all I've wanted -

To walk in such a place with you,

On an earth without maps."

Thank you! Although I have seen Casablanca and South Pacific already, the rest I'll add to my queue! :star:

Why is it modern movies are nowhere near as good as pre-70's films..

What ever happened to the fun and exciting movies from the pre-70's like Jerry lewis or Abott and Costello films or Ben Hur or those old films about Ancient Greece and Rome or movies like Journey to the center of the earth etc.. Now it is only rubbish like Black Christmas or various other cookie cutter films being produced...

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

This is a great Xmas present. I got it last year.

Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection

Anyone seen Rope? That's a seriously messed up movie...

Am also a big fan of Akira Kurosawa - mostly his old Samurai pictures. The new DVD version of Seven Samurai is remastered and looks like it was made yesterday.

Yes, I LOVE Rope. Everyone says that it's one of Hitchcock's worst or least remarkable, but it's my absolute all-time favorite Hitchcock. Did you know it was all shot in one take?

Ahhh I love NetFlix! Finally a way to see so many classic films you could never find in a Blockbuster. Here are some I think are just incredible movies....

BEST FILMS

--- The Third Man - Saw it for the first time and it immediately went to my top ten ever

--- Lawrence of Arabia - greatest of all epic films

--- Singin In The Rain - best musical/dance film

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

--- Rear Window

--- Shadow of a Doubt

--- anything else because he is the master!

SILENT

--- Charlie Chaplin - City Lights - My teenaged son replayed the hilarious boxing scene 3 times.

--- Nanook Of The North - First documentary ever made. 1922 silent film about an eskimo family

WESTERNS

--- The Wild Bunch - my fav western,

--- The Magnificent Seven - great music and fun

--- Red River - John Wayne classic

MYSTERY/DRAMA

--- Manchurian Candidate (original version of course!)

--- Maltese Falcon - Humphrey Bogart and great cast

--- Chinatown

--- Sleuth - great cast and story

--- LA Confidential - Modern classic!

--- Memento - another modern classic

COURTROOM

--- 12 Angry Men

--- Witness For The Prosecution

--- Inherit The Wind

COMEDY

--- Night At The Opera - Marx Brothers classic

--- The Producers (original version)

DAVID LYNCH

--- Eraserhead (Unlike anything you have ever seen!)

--- The Elephant Man

I love movies and over the past few years have put together a pretty terrific home theater. I've seen info posted here about plasma and other big screen TVs. They are great but you can't neglect the sound. A good surround sound system is a MUST!! It totally changes the viewing experience.
