Confused about sponsorship

Do they usually change it every year? We were planning on getting my mother to be a co sponsor just in case.

Yes, it typically changes each year. A couple years back there was no change once, but it usually does rise a little each year. It does not go up by much though. You will use whatever is currently on the USCIS site though. The consulates and USCIS will not require guidelines that are not out and updated on their website yet. So, 2013 guidelines is what you currently need. 2014 will most likely come out in March.

I have a friend who is looking for a job now, who when she gets a job would like to help co-sponsor- how long will she have to work there before she can legally co-sponsor him?

hi

did your friend file taxes? it's not only having a job, but also paying taxes

I'm guessing she will file for taxes based on what she earned last year. Also have you heard anything about the fiance needing to live with the co-sponsor? Someone I know who has helped people with other immigration issues mentioned that, but I don't know if she just heard wrong. Any idea?

A co-sponsor can be any USC or LPR residing anywhere in the US.

hi

there is a difference between the joint sponsor and household member. the joint sponsor as said can be any usc or lpr that resides in the US, but the household member has to be a spouse of direct family member of the petitioner that lives in the same house, such as a parent or sibling to combine income

or if the joint sponsor is married and needs to combine income with spouse, but that is for adjustment of status

No using household members with an I-134 for a K-1. There is no combining of incomes with the I-134. That is only for an I-864. You need a co-sponsor that meets the requirement on their own for their household size plus the foreign fiance(e).

So you're saying that if my friend who wants to help gets a job, she'll have to make enough to be above the 125% poverty line for her family of three, and for my fiance. So how much money (a year) would that be exactly?

Yes. If for instance she has a spouse and a child, then her household is 4 when including the foreign fiance(e). Poverty guidelines are here > http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864p.pdf

Your required income depends upon where you live. Here is a link for the USA poverty threshold guidelines:

http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/13poverty.cfm

So for example, if you live in one of the 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii have different thresholds), the threshold for a family of 2 (just you and your fiance) will be $15,510. If you or her have children, just add a family member(s) as per the chart.

Its actually $19,387 for a household size of 2. For a K-1 visa case most embassies require 125%, not 100%, of poverty guidelines.

For a household size of 4, your friend will need to make $29,437.

Thanks guys! Still no actual bites yet. Those who want to help or either looking for a job, or going through fincanial issues not based on them not having a good enough job. Those who believe in prayer, please pray. This waiting is like the hardest thing to do.
