My fiancee arrived on K1 visa. I made the mistake of not taking her to apply for a social security number while she had her K1 status. We got married 30 days after her arrival to the USA, then we went to the Social Security office where she was DENIED the opportunity to apply for a social security card because they told us that the marriage "changed her status". We tried several times to get the SS card, but they would not allow it. So, 2 months ago we submitted the AOS (1-765 and the I-485), and today we received her EAD card in the mail. Can we now go get her social security number, or will we have to wait until we get approval of the I-485 too?

Thanks for all replies.

yup - EAD card in hand? Can apply for SSN at your fav local SSA office.

If any fuss there, ask for a supervisor.

Most front-line clerks are abysmal and are not properly trained.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Thanks..

my wife got her SS card when she arrived, but they refused to give her 16 year old daughter a SS# unless she had an EAD... We got the EAD the other day but still waiting for the GC.. I was just looking to see if they would give her a SS#..

thanks for the info.!

ya, K-2 visa holders don't qualify for a SSN , but K-2 visa holders WITH an EAD card, or green card, do.
