Hi!

I'm about to become a permanent resident and I'm trying to understand the process for bringing my significant other to the US with me. If we get married after I get my green card:

1. Do I have to be living and working in the US in order to petition her?

2. If everything went smoothly, about how long would the process take? I tried to find out online and people say 3-5 years but the dates seem to be current now so I'm very confused.

Thank you all for your help!

1. Yes-ish; because to maintain your greencard, you need to be resident in the USA.

2. Currently, it should take about a year. This may change though; until fairly recently, it DID take 2-3 years.

I don't know what is your case though. I know instances when people won their green cards and then got married before the interview and everything was fine. Actually, people from the Embassy advised them to get married before receiving their interviews. They may ask why you married right before the interview but if your relations are true and sincere they don't mind. Unless your case is a different one and you get your green card as not married child.

Depends on how he is getting his Green Card.

Exactly...it depends. Getting married BEFORE entering The USA could void everything. ~~~

Depends on how he is getting his Green Card.

I have a family petition for "unmarried son/daughter of citizen" so getting married before getting my greencard is unfortunately not an option. Thank you all for your help, I'll probably become a regular around these forums, and I hope the spouse of greencard holder petitions move fast, a year+ seems like a looong time to wait to be with your spouse.
