Hi everyone,

I am having my interview tomorrow at Chicago office. I choose to change my name. Does anyone know how much delay will name change cause?? I do live in Chicago by the way.

Immigration no longer do that.

Your are interviewing what for ? For Citizenship ? if so, you cannot change your name. However, you can change your name through the court after you become citizen..go down to your nearest courthouse or website fill out the form and submit there pay the fee go for publication (e.g news paper) pay fee there as well and wait for your hearing date i have done it back in 2011 here in California. it's very damn simple process you don't have to hire lawyer. Good luck.

Wrong. There is a special place on the N-400 application where the intending USC can officailly change their name (Section D asks about name change and is optional) and it works the same as a court order--without all the fees and waiting. You can change your name to "Santa Clause" at this time if you want to. No documentation needed.

OP: It will not slow down the process unless the person types the name incorrectly and you have to have it fixed--just make very certain the name change is what you want and SPELLED correctly too.

Good luck,

Dave

well, i had filled out N-400 application ..i am fully aware there is an option changing your name even i had filled out that part that i would like to change my name..the time of interview i was told by Interviewer that you have to go to court in order to change your name WE LONGER DO IT HERE . it perhaps different from state to state but here in CALIFORNIA they don't do it anymore. it was my personally experience.

i request Please share your experience if immigration will or will not change your name . Thanks :)

If they don't do it anymore why they still have the name change option in the application it's self??

I will share my experience.

I know they do it but I am just so affried it will delay my oath. And planing to travel by the end of this year!

Hhhh no I am not changing my name to Santa clause as I don't like to buy or give gifts to people. But I am going to use my middle name as my last name. I don't want to use my husbands last name anymore( I don't like it) And I will change the spelling of my first name!

You apply for the name change with the N400 form but you can't take part in the administrative oath like most people do. You have to wait for a judicial oath since a name change can only be granted by a judge. Because a smaller number of applicants choose to change their name, they wait until there are enough of them before doing the judicial oat, just like they wait till they have a large group to do the administrative oath.

Depending on how many people are processing through your local office and doing the name change, and also how soon the next judicial oath, is you could complete the process very quickly or have to wait a few extra weeks/months. Regardless, there's no way to know what will happen until it actually does.

All the best to you!

congrsmile.png .... you're lucky... i wish would have been living in Chicago at the time ..

I feel what you went through:(. I had to make some change to my last name during the interview. When I asked the officer about adding my husband last name to my family name. He said you come add as many name as want even if you want to call your self Michelle Obama it's ok. It's your decision:):)

Also I find out that the court has citizenship ceremony twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday so prying I will be inviting to one of them soon
