Bush knew that Katrina would be horrible and chose to ignore it.

Another big surprise: the administration is trying to point the finger elsewhere (this time at local officials) to shift blame.

Let's see...

  • Katrina response; not their fault
  • Iraq in near civil war; also not their fault
  • Port security decisions made without presidential knowledge - poses no threat to national security, they threaten their first veto.
  • Record debt and economic deficit; not bad for the country.

People may finally be waking up. CBS polling puts W's approval rating at 34%. If I'm not much mistaken that pretty much puts him on a par with Richard Nixon...

Too little too late. Bush already got reelected (actually won the popular election last time).

Yep - but its interesting how quickly things can change.

Ultimately there's only so many directions that they can point the finger of blame before people take a closer look at the guy doing the pointing.

Even with Carter and long way to go to reach Nixon.

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/Da...gacy010117.html

End-of Presidency Job Approval Ratings

Jimmy Carter (1981) 34%

Richard Nixon (1974) 24%

I can proudly say "I didn't vote for him!"

I voted for him twice.

The first time he has turned out to not be what he ran as and second time the lesser of two evils.

I think it will depend on who's telling the history lesson. If you listen to die hard liberals, Reagan's legacy is that he built up the Nuclear Weopans arsenal to the disasterous levels it is still in and ran up the national debt to the point of no return. If you listen to old dittoheads he is responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union and a record economic period for all Americans.

It will probably be similar for Bush, unless Iraq goes into civil war, becomes an ally with Iran, kicks our troops out, and helps anihilate Israel. Then he'll probably be remembered for that.

Not quite. The boardrooms fared unproportionally better than the rank and file. The middle class erosion got a violent shove. It's hardly been a rosy record for ALL Americans. ;)

funny, in my bio class we just started the newest edition for our textbook. And I paraphrase, Bush will go down in history as having the worst environmental record in the history of the American country. =(

My grandpa-in-law voted for him and the other day he said, "well at least I won't live long enough to see what else he'll do". =(

Had he not let the Watergate thing get out of hand he probably would have thought to be a rather good president and Watergate didn't really directly affect the average U.S. citizen.

Normalizing of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and partially abandoning the Republic of China on Taiwan as part of Realpolitik, a foreign policy eschewing moral considerations. In the short term Nixon was successful in playing the "China card" against the Soviet Union and its client state North Vietnam.

Détente The peaceful pause in the Cold War; detente ended in 1979, replaced by another phase of the Cold War.

Establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Establishment of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Establishment of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Establishment of the Supplemental Security Income program.

Establishment of the Office of Minority Business Enterprise

SALT I, or Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, led to the signing of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

"Vietnamization": the training and arming of South Vietnamese forces to allow the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam.
