I'm currently an F1 student and living with my fiancé. We plan on getting married when my semester is up (so as not to interfere with school). We share a home and some finances (like car insurance, utilities etc) but our accounts are separate, which I don't think is exactly uncommon these days. I'm a little nervous about this whole process, mainly because my fiance is quite a bit older than me (I'm in my 20's, he's in his 40's) and although we're a perfect match on every other level, we sleep in separate bedrooms. This is purely for sleep purposes, and doesn't interfere with intimacy or anything, I'm a very, veryyy light sleeper (I sleep with ear plugs and an eye mask) and need complete silence and darkness when I sleep. He on the other hand, snores and prefers to fall asleep with the tv on, which I absolutely cannot deal with. We also have a huge difference in mattress preference, I need very soft and squishy (think layers of foam that you sink into), whereas his back hurts if the mattress isn't rock hard. He also works late and travels due to his job, which brings him home at odd hours (and sometimes he needs to be up at 4am, whereas I don't need to get up until 8am).. Rather than disturb each other with our differing sleep preferences, we opted (mutually) for separate bedrooms and it works very well for us. Our home is a dual-master. This seems to be fairly common in a lot of marriages, but I can see it being an issue for immigration purposes, since I've heard a lot of the interview questions have to do with 'what side of the bed does your partner sleep on' etc and I'm aware that separate sleeping arrangements might look sketchy?? Especially because of our age difference. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Should we just tell them we share a bed? (I don't want to lie though...) Do you think they would understand if we're just up front and honest about our sleeping arrangement and why?

1. this might come up at the interview, but I doubt it.

2. it might be an issue if and when there's a home visit.

Mostly, though, this isn't an issue and IMO, won't be discussed unless yer pegged for a Stokes Interview.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

My husband snore, I believe the neighbors have moved to the far end of their houses. We actually work opposite shifts so we share a room but not at the same time usually. If there is any doubt you could always play a file of his snoring sounds.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Thanks! We don't really know anything about this whole process, but we thought they just interrogated everyone like you see in the movies.. I just googled 'stokes interview' cause I didn't actually know what it was. We thought they did that sort of thing for everybody but I guess not. Do they generally do home visits? That sounds kind of creepy/invasive ohmy.png

Haha aww! This makes me feel better. I think this sort of thing is super common, but we'd just be under a bit more scrutiny than a normal USC couple. The audio is a good idea just in case :) I

Ya, you might get a home visit IF the stuff you submitted for the adjustment of status is either scant or smells bad.

Same for a Stokes Interview.

MOST people get neither, as they prepped properly, made the time to 'submit more' than just the government forms with signatures.

My husband and I take turns sleeping in the guest room depending on who is snoring the loudest that night. It didn't come up during the interview. Probably because we had other evidence of a relationship. But yeah I remember wondering what would have happened if they asked us that.

Even if it comes up, as long as the two of you give reasonable and consistent explanations of the reasons for keeping separate bedrooms (like you just did in your post), you'll be fine.

Spouse-based AOS from out-of-status H-1B, May - Aug 2012

Removal of conditions, Aug - Nov 2014
