I-864A Joint Tax Return of Parents & Income to put on their individual I-864A

Hello,

My parents and I are sponsoring my wife and I have shown my parents as household member on form I-864 (affidavit of support). So, I send two I-864 A form, one is for my dad and other is for my mom. I showed their individual income from w-2 on I-864 A and send it to NVC. But, NVC send me correction checklist stating,"Income indicated on line 11 of the I-864A doesn't correspond to that shown on the most recent tax return and W-2".

Now, my question is which income should I put on line 11 of their individual I-864A? The total joint income shown on their joint tax return or their individual income from W-2?

Please, help me with this issue.

You are combining your income when your parents use I-864a instead of I-864.

My suggestion:

You sign a completed I-864

Your parent who makes the most money signs and I-864

Your parent who makes less money signs an I864a

This is easier if they MFJ and just submit their tax transcripts vs w2 and 1040s. (when you submit with a tax return it must be the complete return, not just a w2.)

Total income, even if it is a joint return. Total income is line 22 of the 1040 or can be found on page 2 of an IRS tax transcript at the end of the 'Income' section. It will say TOTAL INCOME. That is the amount to use for #13 of the I-864 and #11 of the I-864A.

Edited to add: I agree with NRL about how you are doing the forms. It might be easier for you to do your I-864 and then have one parent do their own I-864 and the other parent add their I-864A with their spouse's I-864. So,

You = I-864

Parent One = I-864

Parent Two = I-864A

Correct. Head of household should always provide an I-864. Petitioner also provides an I-864. If the parent's don't make enough without combining with the petitioner, find a better qualified sponsor.
