Does the title have to be in my name 12 months to import

Hi everyone,

I will taking out a personal loan to pay of my loan with Nissan Canada, so I can import my 2012 Nissan Versa to the USA (Houston, TX specifically).

This will be a permanent import as I am dual citizen moving back to the USA for work.

I was told that after the loan is paid off that the title must officially be in my name for 12 months before I can import it.

Is this true?

Thanks!

According the CBP website when you move things across the border as part of immigration so that you do not pay duty on the item, you need to have owned it for a year. Otherwise you would have to pay duty on the item.

I would call them directly - you have a slightly different situation then many of us. You are a dual citizen moving home and this is your primary vehicle, you're not intending on selling it.

When did you buy the the car ? you have owned it since you drove it from the dealer. The rule is to keep you from importing cars every month. They want to ensure they are really yours not some sort of used car business you are running

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I bought it in March 2012, and I drive it regularly, and have no intention of selling it.
