SAN DIEGO as POE

Please make sure to leave a review when you do -- there aren't many there, and my fiance will use San Diego as his POE in August or September, so I'm curious how it goes for you on K-1.

I've come through SAN several times from London (that's a nice flight, I really prefer that one for EU trips), but of course I'm the USC so it's not the same. He's come through once or twice as a regular visa waiver visitor and had no issues. But of course K-1 will be quite different, so we'll see!

I flew into San Diego in February, came on the daily nonstop-flight from London.

All in all it was pretty easy. When I came to the CPB officer, I handed over my passport and the sealed envelope, and he didn't ask any questions, entered something into his computer, took my fingerprints and photo. He then told me to take a seat in front of the CPB office for secondary inspection. After about 10 minutes another officer came and asked me in, he was friendly and pretty laid back, went through the contents of the sealed envelope and asked some basic questions.

- What brings you to the U.S. today?

- What's the name of your fiancée?

- When will you get married?

- Have you met her parents?

- Do you have anything to declare? Any gifts for your fiancée?

He also asked me for the sealed envelope containing the medical exam result, he tore that open, put it with the other documents, and gave me a photocopy. Then he stamped my passport and I-94, reminded me that I have to get married within 90 days or leave the country ("otherwise we'll go hunting for you..."), and sent me on my way.

As I said, pretty easy, no stress.

We are hoping to use the San Diego POE too, and it is nice they have direct flights from Tokyo to San Diego now, as that will make the whole flying process easier all around.

I can only recommend San Diego as POE, I found LAX to be much more stressful and crowded when I entered on VWP.

We'll be using San Diego as POE pretty soon too (fingers crossed).

JAL has a great flight from Manila through Tokyo, only about 17 hours and if you happen to have British Airways avios miles you can use those to get a great deal with short notice.

I haven't been to the airport since they extended the terminal - do we still meet incoming international visitors at the same place, or did it move?

Christmas 2011 was the last I met international arrivals ... was that before or after the terminal expansion? It seemed like the normal area, downstairs with a few hard couches outside to wait on, and janitor and restroom doors and service corridors everywhere .. not exactly WELCOME TO AMERICA but it was easy enough! May be different now though, I'm not sure!
