Is the government recording and listening to your every phone call and probing every email for dangerous ideas? Probably--if certain insiders are to be believed. According to one former FBI agent, the US government may indeed keep a massive database where all domestic communications are recorded and stored.

On May 1, Tim Clemente, former member of the Joint Terrorism Task force was interviewed by CNN's Erin Burnett in a segment regarding the FBI's investigation of alleged Boston marathon bomber Tamerian Tsarnaev's widow Katherine Russell. Ms. Russell is currently beingA investigated by Federal authorities to determine if she had any foreknowledge of the Marathon plot, or aided her late husband and brother-in-law to help them elude capture. Specifically, authorities have centered in on a phone call between Russell and Tsarnaev that took place after Tamerian's photo was released to the public as a person of interest.

During the discussion on CNN, Clemente mentioned that even if Russell did not cooperate with investigators, the authorities would still have the ability to determine the contents of this phone call. In fact, they may have the ability to go back and listen to all phone calls.

From the transcripts:

CLEMENTE: ...We certainly have ways in national security investigations to find out exactly what was said in that conversation. It's not necessarily something that the FBI is going to want to present in court, but it may help lead the investigation and/or lead to questioning of her. We certainly can find that out. BURNETT: So they can actually get that? We can know what people are saying, that is incredible. CLEMENTE: ...Welcome to America. All of that stuff is being captured as we speak whether we know it or like it or not.

Clemente appeared on CNN the following morning to elaborate on his comments with host Carol Costello. During that exchange, Clemente went on to say "there are lots of assets at our disposal throughout the intelligence community... assets [that] allow us to gain information intelligence on things that we can't use ordinarily in a criminal investigation, but that are used for major terrorism investigations or counter intelligence investigations."

When asked for more details, Clemente somewhat reluctantly responded "I'm talking about all digital communications are--there's a way to look at digital communications in the past. I can't go into detail of how that's done or what's done. But I can tell you that no digital communication is secure. So [the conversation between Russell and Tsarnaev] will be found out. The conversation will be known."

Let me just say that this Big Brother stuff is not to be taken lightly. But I remember quite well when Republicans first made all this happen earlier this century. The common conservative defense of this encroachment into the privacy of Americans was - well, if you're not doing anything wrong and if you've got nothing to hide then this really shouldn't be a problem. We must do this to defeat the terrorists. What - aside from the election of a foreign agent of non-Christian faith and non-white skin color to the office of President of the United States - happened that changed the conservative tune on this?

You could ask the same question of the liberal tune, as long as you confine the question to politicians. The opinion of most of the electorate has not changed. It just continues to be ignored by a sufficient majority of our elected representatives.

It sounds like some people don't know what they are talking about.

There are completely secure forms of communication, and encryption that the government could not crack. People hardly ever use it, but it's there.

Radomes

Used to protect from weather and conceal the directional use of the antenna. They regularly intercept satellite transmissions. Covering the antenna's prevents the satellite targets from being identified.

But I think the OP's article is probably referencing the NSA's ECHELON program.

There's been a big data mining thing going on for several decades storing all the digital data sent off into cyber space no matter how relevant or irrelevant it is. Recording and storing "the digital age" like a time capsule. Which from what I understand in my Computer Science classes will be there for a mighty long time for anyone who wants to look at it and can recover it.

Everything has been converted to digital these days so good luck with going off the grid. At the DMV our pictures are stored into a facial recognition program which can be used anywhere that has the program. You may try to disappear but your image could be in the background of someone's picture on a facebook and you'd pop up in the data mine search through the facial recognition software if they were looking for you. Oh Dave disappeared in Oho? Oh look here he his he popped up in Mexico in the background image of someone's facebook photo. Even with plastic surgery there are other tells.

The ever increasing advanced technologies and the highly known survelliance societies aren't kept secret or anything. Just look at the documentary series Frontline and search NSA: Spying on the home front link

They have all kinds of pieces about the technology being used, who uses it, what it's capable of. Once you start looking into all of what's out there it's like going down the rabbit hole Neo.
