Hello all,

I passed my citizenship interview and received my certificate of naturalization on the same day. I have a question with regards to the signatures on Certificate of Naturalization. We were not provided any instructions orally about the signatures and apparently there seems to be some confusion about it.

I see my digitized photo and my usual signature (on the left) embedded in the certificate. This digitized signature is a illegible scrawl of my abbreviated name like the ones that appear on drivers license. The instructions at the back of the certificate states that I would have to sign my full name both on the line in the certificate as well on the photograph towards the right side.

I am confused, should I have to use my usual signature (illegible scrawl) that appears printed on the certificate right now or sign my full name on the photograph as well on the line in the certificate? Further, which signature would I have to use for my passport application?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Hey, I had the same concerns as you when I received my naturalization certificate.

I followed these instructions for signing my certificate http://www.newcitizen.us/after.html

I signed my certificate with the same scribble signature that was printed next to my photo (on the certificate). I also used that same signature for my passport application and there were no problems, I received my passport 2 weeks ago.

I just made sure to sign everything with my (illegible scrawl) for consistency, and I did not encounter any problems with receiving my passport. From what I understand It is very important to sign your certificate using the same matching signature that is printed next to your photo on certificate.

I hope this information helps, because I was confused just like you and everything worked out fine for me by using my regular scrawl.

Good Luck

That link was very helpful! So basically it's:

- If you already signed the picture that's been mounted on the certificate, then you need to sign the certificate the same as the picture.

- If you haven't signed the picture, you need to sign it and the certificate in the same FULL name that is on your certificate

I just tried the full name one. Man that's hard! I like my illegible scrawl :S

Thanks a bunch for addressing my question. It was very helpful. I was stumped as I have never used my full name as my signature any where and wanted to be consistent.
