I got married in Egypt to my husband and he just had his interview a week ago and we got AP, so I was wondering when I get to the US will I need to register my marriage there? or is it better to get it registered there? will any government office have a problem with the marriage contract that proves our marriage?

You do not need to register a foreign marriage in the US and there is no way to do so.

You should get your marriage certificate certified by the American Consulet or Embassy in Egypt first.

Then yes you come to states and can get it registared and a state seal stamped on copies if you make

color copies to match the original. make about 5 or 6 copies.

Go to your county records office and tell them you want to registar your marriage. They will tell you it

will go on the books but it will go under misc. but it will get registared, which is very important.

The original will get something attached to it from your state registars office. The copies will get a

raised seal for a small fee. This is all that will be done. Call your county records office in your area,

they will tell you what needs to be done.

Will this help yes, can it hurt no. This is up to you.

Yes in my state it can and is done all the time.

I have done this and do use it for proof of marriage, and to get things done, and to get my name changed..

Hope this will help you.

Make calls it is up to you..

Good luck..

No, you do not need to do any of this in the US. My husband has been here 3 years and we have never had an issue getting anything as husband and wife (accounts, name change, buying a house, etc.). As long as your marriage certificate from Egypt is legally translated into English, you can use it in the USA if you need to. We used ours no problem at DMV and Social Security office for my name change. Other than that, we have never been asked for our marriage certificate for any reason to do business, much less been required to have a US version of it.

We did get married in the Egyptian Embassy in Qatar where my husband was working, so our marriage is already registered in Egyptian records, but NO, you don't have to register it in the US.

You need to get it authenticated in the US embassy in Cairo to be used in the US. That's what I was told to do at the embassy! I did it, and it won't harm! I know a friend who can't change her last name in the US because of that paper not being authenticated!

Sure it won't hurt, but just fyi, I never set foot inside a US embassy to get ours "authenticated" and I've never had a problem here in the US changing my name on anything.

We just had our marriage certificate legally translated into English from a certified translator in Qatar, with official stamps all over it, and that was all we needed for me to change my name on EVERYTHING in the USA (bank accounts, Social Security, DMV, etc.).

best wishes...

Does your friend not know that she can just do it through the probate court in a worst case scenario?

Your friend should only need the English translation of it anyways.

We didn't get ours authenticated either. By the time the damn thing got translated and stamped a bazillion times, I was all done with it. I wasn't going to go back to the embassy to get it authenticated.
