You will always have good hearted people in all parts of the US and world. The problem is what about those in charge. If they wanted a change, they could implement it. If they said, let's revamp the program so we can build more productive members of society, how much pushback would it receive? You might be right it's a small contigient, but if it's the 1%, it's the richest, most powerful folks out there.

You give politicians and the government too much credit. They're both fairly useless. As far as the richest 1%, think about it. Who would benefit the most by a huge percentage of the minority population making more $? The richest 1%. All these CEOs would benefit. It doesn't do anyone any good to have a segment of society sitting around collecting government benefits. Not the rich, not the poor, no one. I'm not saying that the rich white 1% really care. Honestly, they probably don't care one way or the other. There's no conspiracy out there that I'm aware of to keep minority population poor. If there is, you can look at your friends in the Democratic party with all their handouts and point the finger at them. That's their base.

Oh they can get the business as well. But if it was that easy, then the welfare program would have been fixed a long time ago, you have non minorities on it as well, although the poverty line for white people is still higher than for black and brown people. You've said it yourself, if there was a better incentive or benefits with strings, this could all be cleaned up. If the democratic party is all about handouts, and the republican party is all about get your own stuff, but not from us, where is the middle ground? And where would minorities fit in in the grand scheme of things(whites too, who are poor).

I agree, it's a dilemma that probably wont be fixed quickly. There's a lack of trust on both sides. I think the noise level is so loud now on both sides, it's hard to find any common ground.

In Thailand, when they bust you for doing something wrong in politics, they ban you for 5 years. Maybe they need to do that here, to all of them.

We'd have no politicians left. I support this.

Agreed that's the wrong way to go about it. Still I wonder how successful they would be by saying to the poor "Look, we will never be about rewarding people for doing nothing. However, we'll meet you half way." Have some kind of strings attached to getting benefits, and I don't mean shoveling horse $hit or picking fruit on the weekends. Some kind of strings that benefits both sides. Something Peace Corps like. I'd love to see Gary get off his a$$ and do something for the money he gets. I heard something about a Job Corps awhile back. Not sure who came up with that, but that sounds good on the surface.

Ev hit it on the head, there wouldn't be anyone left. If both side could calm down for just a bit, you could compromise, but when you have one side built on dependence and accusation of racism, and the other side built on self reliance and actual racism, no real room to move.
