QUESTIONS! WHICH VISA IS FASTER?

Ok so I feel like a lot of people file for, I believe the K1/K3 fiance visas, why? Isn't the IR1/CR1 visas faster? Like if they are faster then why are people filing for K1 instead of IR1/CR1 visas (well I know obviously which ever is convenient for them they'll choose which ever)? But I heard that if I was in Colombia that after getting married I should have taken my husband to the embassy because it the process is faster, is this true? And what process is that called? I heard it was called DCF but I don't know what DCF means? So many questions and hope all of you could answer them.

Hi. CR1 visas are only faster in countries where DCF is available. If DCF is not avaiblable, K1 visas are usually faster, which may be why more people opt for it. DCF stands for Direct Consular Filing, but I dont know much else about because it is not available in my country.. so I am looking at a 8-10 month wait for my CR1. DCF I believe takes around 4 months.

Edited to add: Also, I believe you and your husband have to both live in the same country for about 6 months to be eligible for DCF (Which is another reason why a lot of people dont do it). Do you both live in colombia? (I´m not sure aobut the 6 months but I believe that is true for the philipines.. might not be true for all countries).

No but I could have. Can I go back and lets say go to the embassy and I don't know can they make it go faster or something if I'm there?

Not everyone is thinking at the time "which is faster"

People that file for K1s, first of all, know about the K1, and have decided to wait about a year to get married.

You can't look at the length of the entire process as a deciding factor.

Let's say CR1s took 5 months start to finish, not everyone would be jumping at a CR1.

Because some people just got engaged and they want to stay engaged for the next 8-12 months so they go the K1 route.

Otherwise they would stay engaged for 8-12 months, then wait another 5 months while going through CR1.

OR they would elope and start the process the next day after the wedding.

It's not about which one is faster.

It's about what's right for the timeline of your relationship.

And K3s aren't really granted anymore and unless your local office is Atlanta, I wouldn't even consider wasting your time filing the paper trail for one.

I'm sorry but this is misleading, not so much because it's inaccurate but the analysis is incomplete. Generally when people are asking this question legitimately, they are NOT married, BECAUSE, if married, the K1 visa is out of the question anyway. Unless you already live together abroad long term (rare here) in country with DCF, DCF is simply not a consideration anyway.

If you've already met in person and are now in separate countries, the K1 visa will always be faster because you actually HAVE a fiancee and can file the petition now. If you haven't met yet, then considering marriage on the first visa may be desirable, not because the spouse visa is faster but because you cut immigration down to visa and remove conditions instead of visa, adjust status, and remove conditions.

The K3 visa is virtually unavailable and when available, stopped saving any appreciable time back in late 2006.

People are usually asking about a timeline "from NOW until visa" rather than from FILING to visa.

When the couple hasn't met and it's the Philippines, they usually still choose the K1 path instead of CR1 because USUALLY, the USC doesn't have the vacation time to spend three weeks in the P.I. (It takes a full two weeks, minimum to actually GET married.)
