Looks like we are finally almost at the end of this process; my husband will have his interview in Paris on March 12. We're trying to figure out (if he is approved at the interview, of course) if my husband will be able to come to the US the very next day. A friend who got his green card a few years back says this:

"No. They will keep his passport and then in about 2-3 weeks send it back to him with a printed temporary visa which will get him in to the US and will enable him to get a SSN." This makes it sound like my husband will have to wait 2-3 weeks after the interview to travel to the US.

But my husband found this online, linked to the notification email we were sent:

"If you are issued an immigrant visa, the consular officer will give you your passport containing the immigrant visa and a sealed packet containing the documents which you provided." This makes it sound like my husband should have the paperwork he needs to travel to the US immediately after a successful interview.

And here on VJ I see this:

"If your relative is outside the US, he/she will be issued an immigrant visa that will handed over to a customs officer at his/her port of entry, and will be issued a stamp in his/her passport until he/she receives the green card by mail." I guess this isn't clear as to whether the visa is issued immediately, or whether it will arrive in the mail 2-3 weeks later.

So I thought the easiest way to clear this up would be to ask about your experience, if you're already on the other side of your interview. If my husband has his consular interview on March 12 and is approved, should he be able to enter the US on March 13?

hat may have been possible in the past but not anymore( probably since 9/11). Iknow itused to be so in Nigeria where they as if you want to wait for the visa or come back next day or so to pick it up. Now the wait could be from one to two weeks. This delay is why some people have even been called up by embassy after a successful interview to be told " after further review we have decided to put you in AP. pls come pick up your passport until we conclude the processing".

so dnt make travel arrangemnet until you have the visa in your hands.

GOD has been WONDERFUL!!!

Great Question !

If I was seeking to answer that -

I'd change my country to France in my profile settings,

then click on the flag under my name

(which drops to the portal for France)

then in the left panel - click on CR-1 timelines,

then click on the sort carat in the interview date column,

then study the timelines of the last 10 people that got approved, studying their profiles, also, and studying their prior posts for the last 3 months.

But that's just me.

Portals are powerful.

Instructions are helpful. :)

As a service to the site, when my own immigration and tax issues are over, I want to put together a wiki page with instructions on how to manage various parts of the site... how to edit your timeline, how to add a signature, how to manage your profile, where to get a ticker and put it in your sig, how to navigate the timelines...

...well that is basically the biggest part of what I do for a living, write documentation for software. :)

I'm a dual US/Hungarian citizen (both by birth; Hungarian citizenship verification TBA), and my husband is a dual British/Irish citizen (by treaty) from Northern Ireland. We are atheists.

All advice is given pursuant to the Disclaimer that you may read at the bottom of each forum page.

LATEST STEPS:

28 Jun 2013: POE Houston

08 Jul 2013: SSN received (at SSA office)

07 Aug 2013: Green Card received

27 Feb 2014: Whoa, life happened. Planning move "back home" together to Republic of Ireland by end of April.

29 Apr 2014: POE Dublin through Heathrow

15 May 2014: Received formal residency/work permission (GNIB card with Stamp 4, one year renewable) for the ROI

For my FULL timeline, see my "About Me" page.

Yikes. Anglais s'il vous plait! Lol. I think I've pretty much reached my limited usage of French on this site. Lol.

Next thing you know I'll be typing as speaking like a southern lady mixed in with my tomboy northern self. Gah. Canadian married to a southern American man. Lol. What a combo in the language dept.

"Teh kosong" for me, like my husband drinks it, thanks :) But yes, it's time I actually woke up and read the help files  Been working with engineers too long!

Niki, I said, "Videos? You can do that? Damn, learn something new every day." Darnell told me flatly I could also indulge in black coffee (heh) and I said, "Milky tea" for me. :)
