They were trespassing, he is defending himself against the shooting death of someone at his hand, on his property, and his defense will most likely be that HE was the victim, or going to be the victim, of a crime and he was right to defend himself, his family and his home. That makes the dead man an "alleged victim" until the court determines the man is guilty and makes the dead man the victim instead of the deceased perpetrator. That's just how the law works.

That said, I often make the mistake of trying to rationalise to irrational people. Unfortunately though my lunch-break is over so I have to stop now. Have a lovely day
