We got married on January 18, 2013 and we are ready to file the AOS, EAD, and AP (if needed). They say it takes about 6-8 weeks for the marriage license to be recorded and we will receive our certificate afterwards. We got a customer receipt of the certificate. Can we submit that in lieu of the notarized certificate?

Marriage Certificate from L.A. County Is really 6 -8 weeks?

It can be, when ya don't pay the extra money for the expedite.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

County Clerk said that the processing is the actual time frame to record the marriage license and not the mailing part. We can actually get the certificate in person if we need it badly, but it is not recorded in their system.

So, when you went in person, with a big wad of cash in hand, what did you walk away with?

We prepaid the marriage license and certificate. We were given a packet which contains two copies of the marriage license. When we got married at the county clerk's office, we were told that they will add it to the pile of marriage licenses (ceremonies that were done that day). The stack will be sent to Norwalk, CA for recordation. It will take 6-8 weeks to record the license. After that, we actually get the marriage certificate. Those were the exact words. We were handed the signed customer receipt that the marriage actually took place. Hope that helps.

Congrats Tin Tin and Mike! The other counties were just walk-in. Unfortunately, L.A. County is like that. We may have to wait for the marriage to be actually recorded before we can get a certificate. Meanwhile we are putting the AOS packet together. I hope Mike is not getting too bored waiting already. Hope all is well with you guys.

My experience with the LA County Recorder's Office (granted not with marriage certificates, but with property-related documents) is that it can take a very long time to get something recorded unless you do it in person. There have been a lot of budgetary cuts over the past two years, and it's significantly slowed things down. However, I now only do walk-ins and my experience at the Norwalk office is that wait times are under half an hour. Is it possible to do a walk-in at this point?

Shoot didn't realized it was your thread (see how much I pay attention!) Yes, they won't release it until it's recorded.

Oh well, that's LA lol :)

Yeah he's been bored alright. Xbox, Netflix and Farmville 2 have been keeping him busy :bonk:

All is well, few good news but will confirm in few days :P Same to you both!

The wait times are usually 30- 60 minutes. Our tentative plan is to wait for 6 week mark and do a walk-in to see if the certificate has been recorded. We can get a certificate in person. We will do keep doing that until it is actually recorded. 6-8 weeks. The annoying part is the actual recording for marriage licenses is unavoidable.

My understanding for property-related documents are faster because of lien-related issues associated to properties. This may be why you can record it on the same day. I guess marriage is the priority list of LA County Recorder's Office.

LA County stopped the expedite in October 2012. We were married October 21, 2012 and received ours on January 15, 2013, yep almost 3 months.

I went down to the LAC recorders office 3 or 4 times and checked on the status, what a bunch of dim-wits.

Good Luck!

We got married at Norwalk LA Recorder on November 29th, 2012 and we got our certified copy of marriage certificate within a week. We did our application a week before and prepaid it 3 days prior the ceremony. So it varies when you'll get your certified copy.
