Question regarding getting married in NYC-license

This is New York specific. I'm applying for our marriage license here in the city and it says we may be asked for proof of prior marriage termination. My question is, do they generally accept copies of divorce decrees or do we need to be prepared with an original from the Court? The City Clerk's site in NYC is not really clear. I'm trying to find out from my fiance if the Embassy returned our originals, but we have copies of everything, just not sure if that is acceptable. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Listed below is the information you will need to fill out the Marriage License Application:

• The application is an affidavit where you and your prospective spouse must list your name; current address; city, state, ZIP code and country; country of birth; date of birth; name and country of birth of your parents; Social Security number; and marital history.
• When you sign the affidavit, you are making a sworn statement that there are no legal impediments to the marriage.
• If you were married before, you must list all prior marriages. You must include your previous spouse's full name; the date the divorce decree was granted; and the city, state, and country where the divorce was issued.
• All divorces, annulments, and dissolutions must be finalized before you apply for a new Marriage License.
• You may be asked to produce the final divorce decree.
• If your spouse is deceased, you must provide such spouse's full name and date of death

Anyone can get married to anyone in NY. You can tell them anything you want on the application. And it is not investigated.

The onus is on you to be truthful. You do not need a social security number. You do not need an original divorce decree (or a copy for that matter). If you don't have it, you don't have it (They won't push the issue).

You are already making a sworn statement that you are eligible to get married.
