n-400, Detained

Good morning and thank you in advance for your help.

I am currently preparing my n-400 application for naturalization, and got to Part 10, Section D (Good moral Character), question 16: "Have you ever been arrested, cited or detained by any law enforcement officer..."

In 2006, I accompanied a friend of mine to a small town near the border with Tijuana, but because I had at that time only a work permit that did not allow me to leave the country, I chose to wait for her until she returns.

I went for a walk, and one police officer stopped next to me (he was in his patroll car) and asked me to answer some questions (name, what I was doing there, etc). Then, after requesting my documents and emptying my pockets, he requested backup. They (when the other officer arrived) took me pictures and then let me go, without any further explanation. They never told me why I was detained. No citations, warnings...

Should I answer Yes to this question and mention the incident?

Thanks again!

No. You weren't detained in my opinion. You were still on the street. I would answer no to this question.

I agree with V and T....you weren't detained. My husband and I were doing a road trip in our RV across the USA....we decided to spend a day in Tijuana....we stopped in a side street in San Diego at night....we were also 'visited' by the police, who looked in the RV, and questioned us... they're actually very active around the border areas...no big deal! :)

Old and Grumpy....But an American Citizen!!!

I will agree with the two folks about you answering No to the question. You were not detained so don't worry... but if you have any doubts, request a thorough background check ie police report before continuing with your application.
