New SSN

Hi,

I will have my AOS interview on Jan 22nd and I already have a SSN that I obtained when I was in a echange program years ago. On my SSN says "valid for work only with DHS Authorization".

I was wondering if I can get a new one without this restriction since now I am in the process of adjusting status? Should I wait after the interview or I can walk in anytime at the Social Security office to get a new one?

What documents should I bring with?

Thank you,

Deb

Once your status is adjusted you`r gonna be issued a new card, most likely you`r gonna have same number but without "valid for work only with DHS Authorization".

You need either EAD or GC to remove this.

This is incorrect.

Only presenting a green card (or its equivalent) will get you an unrestricted social security card. If you present an EAD to the SSA then you will receive a social security card endorsed "Valid for work only with DHS authorization".

You need either EAD or GC to remove this. Based on your timeline, your EAD should be coming shortly...

This is incorrect.

I don't know what I was thinking about when I wrote that. It was incorrect, as pointed out by Hypnos.

You will have to show the GC at the SSA office to get a new SS card without that condition.
