VJers,

My spouse's oath ceremony is over and she is now US citizen. I have to notify social security administration that she is now US citizen (while we were at ceremony, no one from Social Security Administration was present). Is there a form that we have to fill out for this notification at local SS office? How long do we have to wait before we can notify Social Security administration? After notifying them, is my spose going to get a new social security card and number? She did NOT have her name changed....Anyone who recently had their spouse become US citizen, please let me know the process that you guys went thru...

thank you for helping me...

My daughter received citizenship through adoption. We just got her a US passport and took it to the local SS office and they handled everything. I imagine your situation would be the same, just take the certificate to the local SS office.

All you are doing is letting the SSA know that your wife is now a USC and she qualifies for all the benefits a USC does. That is all. No number change. She may receive a new card if the current only has any restrictions listed on it--i.e. "Valid for work with DHS authorization only" or some other statement she had from the original card. Take her certificate of naturalization to the local SSA office, wait in line and show them the certificate and that you want to update her status. Should be simple, but this is the SSA were are talking about.

Congrats on her getting her citizenship,

Dave

My spouse became a US citizen in late August. That same day , we applied for her US passport book and card. She got them within weeks. About 6 weeks after, we took the original Naturalization certificate to Social Security Office to let them know that she is now a US citizen. Within 10 days, we received a new card (same number) in the mail. It is as easy as that. Good Luck.

I just filled out the SS-5 form for my wife and stepdaughter once and saved it on my computer. First time is when they received their EAD cards as legal aliens not allowed to work. 2nd time, using the same printed saved form added their new SS numbers, unchecked the legal aliens not allowed to work to legal aliens, change the date, had them sign it and took in their conditional green cards.

3rd, time using the same pdf form again, changed the citizen to US citizen, changed the date, had them sign it and took in their certificate of naturalization Oh, the 3rd and last time, wife finally agreed to drop her maiden name, we don't do that in this country, no problem. Also made nice copies for them, but insisted on making their copies of that documentation on their old dirty copy machine. Whatever turns them on, each time I walked out with their original documentation, they need that.

Our nearest SS office is 37 miles away, was on my way to work, got their at 8:00 AM, normally don't open the door until 5-10 minutes later, was the first in line and the first one out, while in there, took less than 3 minutes.

You can also mail in your documentation, but may never see it again. Those cards and certificates were darn expensive, wasn't about to risk sending those through the mails.

I had waited for 10 days after the oath ceremony to update the status. It was not hard at all. Fill out the SS-5 form (available online) and bring your proof of citizenship (they will just take a look at your naturalization certificate) and a photo ID. The process is usually completed in 5 minutes. If there has been no name change, you do not really need a new card, but some people did get a new one regardless. When I went to update my status, I told them that I did not need a new card, so the lady confirmed this, entered new info into the system, and I kept my old card. All in all, it was easy and drama free.

After the oath, I first got my passport with regular service in about 25 days. I then went to the SSA office with my passport to update my status. They asked me if I want a new card and I said no since the number does not change anyway. Then they updated their records on the computer and I was done.

They should be very nice, after all, between you and your employer, they are getting 14.8% of your gross pay check, and according to some politicians, you may never see that money again. When I run across a not so nice agent, remind them of that simple basic fact. We are paying their paychecks! They better treat us nice.

If this isn't bad enough, we also have to pay income tax on that FICA tax. Getting us twice!

Its no big deal. My wife became a USC in 1994. We didnt know we had to notify ss until a couple of years ago. Went over there and took care of it. The main effect is if you have a disability claim as the agent explained. Hopefully that wont ever happen.

Another major benefit is that your SSN is linked as US citizen. So whenever your SSN is run for a background check it shows up as US citizen and eases your burden of proof via showing your naturalization certificate or US passport. It is good to have all government agencies up-to-date.

That only started a couple of years ago, SS wouldn't do that for Bush, he wanted SS to keep that database for free. Did it for Obama, he gave SS something like a hundred million bucks.

I don't get it, we were told at my stepdaughter's oath ceremony to wait ten days before applying for a new SS card or passport, takes that long to update the database. But even at that, still had to bring in her certificate of citizenship into the SS office and mail that piece of paper to the DOS to get her US passport.

So what is the SS doing with that hundred million bucks? Storing that data on a hundred million buck flashdrive?
